Magic Johnson scoffs at Stephen A. Smith’s Presidential candidature
Magic Johnson posted a tweet that looked like he was mocking Stephen A. Smith believing he could be a good Democratic candidate for President of the USA.

The Democratic Party of the USA is at a historical crossroads that will alter the country’s political course. It needs a new leader to rally around after the end of the Clinton-Obama faction’s hegemony. One of the new names being floated as a 2028 Presidential candidate, surprisingly, is Stephen A. Smith. The ESPN analyst has been asked about his interest in politics over various junctures in recent times.
It speaks volumes about the political turmoil in America that the Democrats were unable to rein in Donald Trump. The 47th President has allegedly been disastrous for the economy during the first hundred days of his second term. Trump’s tariffs and crackdown on illegal immigrants have made him deeply unpopular with the public. Yet, despite running on a social welfare campaign, Kamala Harris lost the election.
The reasons for this range from Americans believing Harris was undeserving of the nomination, to general disillusion with the government for standing with Israel for their genocide of Palestinian women, children and patients. While neither of these issues have improved in Trump’s 14 weeks in charge, Harris suffered an anti-incumbency wave. She was also viewed as a handpicked favorite of the Biden-Clinton power axis.
Many within the Democratic Party and those who support it believe there is a need for new blood. The rise of Trump has also proved that being a populist who has organic support trumps political experience. Viewing the upcoming elections in this light, Stephen A. Smith does seem like a candidate not too far from this description. Trump has himself welcomed the idea of Smith possibly being a candidate in 2028.
However, Magic Johnson clearly feels differently, as evidenced by his latest tweet.
Is it true that my boy Stephen A. Smith is running for President?

Why Stephen A. Smith is being scoffed by Magic Johnson?
Smith’s animated sports takes and journalistic career are clearly not enough proof of him being cut out for politics. Politicians need to establish consensus, win favor with other senators, and keep lobbyists at bay. While Smith is a multimillionaire media mogul, he doesn’t have the deep pockets to fund his own Presidential campaign. He will need to find deep-pocketed backers, like Joe Biden had Michael Bloomberg.
As a matter of fact, even Magic Johnson himself fits the bill much better than Smith. Johnson has had among the most interesting lives of any sports superstar in America’s history. The Lakers legend was a winner in high school, college, and then became a five-time NBA champion.

He went on to be a successful business owner after his retirement from the sport. He is now worth well over $1.5 billion, despite missing out on the NBA’s most commercially successful salary cap era. The vast majority of his wealth comes from his business enterprises including movie theaters, franchises and more. Johnson also is a part-owner of major league teams in basketball, NFL, MLB and the MLS.
In addition, Johnson has a legendary life story and has enjoyed the great privilege of beating AIDS. At the time of his untimely retirement in 1991, HIV was viewed as a disease that conveyed imminent death. Instead, Johnson has been responsible for funding and research into this condition, helping to extend many patients’ lives. His survival by itself is a miracle that would buoy the hardest of his critics.
Given his incomparable run of success at life in different spheres over the years, it is clear why Johnson views Smith’s potential presidential campaign with disdain. Expecting a poor person from Saginaw, Michigan who worked his way to being worth billions to admire a hot take artist is folly.
