On Thursday, September 4. NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico revealed the opener of the next season on NBC’s TODAY show Monday morning. The NFL will officially kick off with the clash between two NFC East rivals Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys.

As tradition, the Philadelphia Eagles, being the defending champions, usually start the season at home on the Thursday before Week 1. The Dallas Cowboys, as a sworn enemy, add to the drama and intensity right from the beginning of the season.

While the Philadelphia Eagles had become a consistent postseason force, the Cowboys are still the leaders of the all-time series, 74-58. The Cowboys are also one of the most consistent teams in the league, with the highest game-winning percentage among all the teams.

The two teams, as divisional rivals, often play each other twice in one season. However, the upcoming Week 1 fixture is the first time the teams have played each other in Week 1 since 2000. In their first week meeting of 2000, the Eagles under Andy Reid came through with a 41-14 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Texas.

The game became a pop culture hit with the players’ usage of pickle juice to beat the sweltering heat.

“Andy Reid’s Eagles used a surprise onside kick to help them get an early lead,” NBC’s Dave Zangaro during that game.

The Eagles and Cowboys are both entering the 2025 season with high expectations. The Eagles are aiming to repeat as champions, while the Cowboys are seeking redemption.

The Cowboys have not won a Super Bowl since the 1995 season, nor have they won more than one playoff game in a campaign. They keep falling short in the playoffs. Last season, they crumbled badly in the absence of Dak Prescott. In contrast, the Eagles’ recent success includes two championships in the last ten seasons, once with Nick Foles and other with Jalen Hurts.

This season opener would serve more than just divisional bragging rights. It offered the Cowboys a front-row view of the Eagles’ banner-raising ceremony. The stakes were clear from the start, setting the tone for another heated year in the NFC East. Fans and analysts alike expected fireworks when these rivals took the field in September.

Eagles vs Cowboys is more about Howie Roseman and Jerry Jones rather than the players

The fight is more than a petty rivalry, it’s a management battle between Howie Roseman and Jerry Jones. Howie Roseman, the general manager of the Eagles, has been touted as one of the best managers in recent times.

Roseman has won over his fans by winning a new championship with an entirely new roster. Furthermore, he has made some good decisions, including signing Saquon Barkley. Barkley was the best running back in the season after triumphing over Baltimore Ravens RB Derrick Henry in the top rushing yards list.

On the other hand, Jerry Jones has been criticized by online media for his management errors. The general manager and owner of the Cowboys, Jones, made some questionable decisions, including overpaying quarterback Dak Prescott, extending drama through the offseason, and delaying practice.

The Cowboys, America’s Team, have been in decline as mentioned above. The current offseason also didn’t shift the idea about the team’s progress either. Jones brought in Brian Schottenheimer, who ideally didn’t buy into the idea of a head coach who’s winning championships. Additionally, the entire revamp of the coaching personnel makes it hard for players to align themselves as well.

In the NFL Draft, the Cowboys received hate for not pushing enough to draft Ashton Jeanty. Furthermore, their wideout choice in George Pickens last week was also criticised for its very surprising nature.
