The one complaint that Cowboys fans have had with the franchise was that Jerry Jones hesitated in trading for star players from other teams and relied heavily on the draft to onboard talent. This year, the team has been active during free agency, and the biggest move that Dallas has pulled off was to trade for George Pickens.
The Cowboys acquired Pickens via trade in exchange for two late-round draft picks. Their offense now looks a lot more dangerous than it did last season. After the trade was official, there was nobody happier than quarterback Dak Prescott. He now has two talented wide receivers to rely upon.
Despite lacking a rushing attack, Dallas has built up a respectable receiver core. As George Pickens settles in and gets accustomed to Brian Schottenheimer’s playbook, Dak Prescott has already begun to envision throwing passes to him. When asked about his expectations of playing with Pickens by 96.7 The Ticket, the quarterback gave a candid response.
We’ve connected. I’m excited. You turn on the tape, you see a guy that can catch the football. You put the football anywhere in his vicinity, very strong hands. More than a 50/50 catcher. He thinks it’s his ball when it’s in the air. I’m excited for him. I know we needed some help at that position…It’s hard to double-team two guys…I think we’re putting together a nice group of weapons.

Dak Prescott is right about one thing: defenses will not be able to double-team Pickens and Lamb on every possession. Last season, CeeDee Lamb was the go-to option, the fans knew it, the entire Cowboys bench knew it, the cornerbacks on the field knew it, and so did all defensive coordinators. He faced a double-team on nearly every possession; however, with Pickens, things will now change.
George Pickens will hope to make a positive impact on the Cowboys’ offense
Despite his pros, Pickens comes with a few concerns. The wide receiver has gained notoriety for his sudden bursts of rage during games, which have led him to engage in physical altercations with cornerbacks. Furthermore, if he gets discontented with the manner in which a team is utilizing him, Pickens vents out his frustration to the media. Such behavior can prove to be detrimental to team chemistry.

The aforementioned reasons are what led Pittsburgh to seek a trade for him. However, there is good reason to believe that Pickens will utilize this opportunity to make a fresh start and rebuild his reputation. He enters the final year of his rookie deal, and if he expects to be compensated well, there can be no slip-ups. This would be easier said than done, so fans will need to wait and watch.

Although Pickens has been in the limelight, all eyes will be on a coach, and not any player, this season for the Cowboys. As Brian Schottenheimer gears up to embrace the biggest challenge of his life, his decisions will make or break this team. The pressure to perform is immense on him and quarterback Dak Prescott. While Schottenheimer’s future as a head coach in the NFL depends on his performance in Dallas, Prescott will be fazed by the pressure of living up to his $60 million paycheck.
