Conor McGregor continues making headlines even though he has remained inactive as a professional fighter since the year 2021. The veteran fighter hasn’t fought since UFC 264, breaking his leg during a fight against longtime rival Dustin Poirier. Many had stopped speculating about his return, assuming retirement, but McGregor’s recent tweet sparked new hope among fans.

A few months ago, McGregor announced he was done fighting and wanted to focus entirely on pursuing his political career ambitions. Additionally, his lack of serious training lowered expectations, even among his most loyal and passionate supporters within the MMA community. However, in a surprising recent post, McGregor tagged UFC CEO Dana White and hinted at a possible comeback soon.

McGregor was expected to return last year at UFC 303 against Michael Chandler, but the highly anticipated fight was eventually canceled. Since that cancelation, no official updates have emerged regarding McGregor’s comeback or a new opponent being finalized by the UFC. White also stopped mentioning the fight, creating further doubts about McGregor’s return to professional fighting soon.

On top of everything, the Irishman’s controversies, like the se*ual assault lawsuit and internet rants, have complicated his return significantly. His reputation has suffered greatly among Irish fans, who once adored him as a national icon and proud global representative. Despite this, his global fanbase, especially in America, continues growing, showing undying support for his brand and larger-than-life persona.

During his UFC absence, the former double champion has redirected energy toward expanding his business empire across multiple industries and ventures. Last year, he shocked everyone by becoming the co-owner of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship and has actively promoted it. The Irish fighter has also shown interest in potentially making a BKFC debut but that hasn’t stopped him from staying updated with UFC.

Other than being a former double champion, McGregor has been UFC’s biggest asset in terms of global growth. He was the reason the promotion got millions of new fans and top-grossing pay-per-view events. Recently, Dana White made a massive announcement that has changed the future of both the lightweight and welterweight divisions. 

White stated that pound-for-pound king Islam Makhachev has officially vacated the lightweight title to pursue challenges in another division. Additionally, Ilia Topuria and Charles Oliveira are now scheduled to compete for the vacant lightweight title at the UFC 317 event. After hearing the announcement, McGregor took to social media and praised  White for making such a bold decision.

Following the announcement, Makhachev had to endure a variety of criticism for allegedly running away from Topuria. However, the Dagestani had no interest in fighting another featherweight and getting a second title remains valuable for his legacy. McGregor always had an ongoing rivalry with Team Khabib, so Makhachev vacating his belt might bring him personal satisfaction.

He’s also shown interest in fighting Oliveira, making that matchup a potential blockbuster for fans around the globe. In addition, McGregor shares heated tension with Topuria, adding even more intrigue to potential future clashes inside the octagon.
