On Friday, Juan Soto made his long-awaited return to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The 4-time MLB All-Star was loudly booed during his first trip here by the New York Yankees fans since his mega $765 million deal with the New York Mets in December last year.

This week marks the first-ever Rivalry Week in the MLB. In this, the Yankees welcomed their crosstown rivals, the NY Mets, for a 3-game Subway Series. While both teams had made impressive starts to the 2025 season, the big spotlight from on Soto.

The Dominican International spent the 2024 season with the Yankees after being traded from the San Diego Padres. In his one-year stay, the outfielder would become one of the team’s best offensive star and smashed 41 home runs in the regular season.

After losing in the World Series, Soto became a free agent. Following weeks of speculations, Soto agreed to join the Mets on a 15-year, $765 million deal and switched teams in New York. Several Yankees fans did not like seeing him join their crosstown rivals and bashed him online.

Ahead of the game on Friday, Soto admitted that he was expecting a hostile reception from the crowd. As he entered the batters’ box in the first inning, loud boos would rain down. Soto would keep his composure and even tip his hat towards the fans.

The jeering from the fans did not stop there. Before making his way to the right field, the fans at the “Bleacher Creatures” would turn their backs on him.

Soto was also involved in the final out of the game. He was the last batter for the Mets in the top of the ninth inning. The 26-year-old would hit a fly ball into center field, which was caught by Trent Grisham. The Yankees ended up taking the game 6-2.

After Juan Soto picked the New York Mets’ $765 million offer instead of the New York Yankees’ $760 million one, it was expected that he would get an enormous negative reaction from the Yanks. That is exactly what happened as the outfielder received some huge jeers.

This was something Soto was expecting. After the game, the Mets superstar was asked about whether this was the worst he had ever been booed by the fans. He nodded his head and admitted that the fans were ‘really loud‘ in this game.

I think so. They were really loud.

The Mets star also expressed that he did not realize that the fans had turned their back on him before he took to the field. He claimed that he just listened to the boos and tried to not make any eye contact.

When asked about the reception Soto got from the fans, Boone first laughed and expressed that it was a pretty good environment created by them.

It was a pretty great environment…Certainly one of those nights where you can really feel the energy in the building.

This win was the Yankees’ second successive win and their 4th win in their last 5 games. The Mets, on the other hand, have now lost back-to-back games. They have not lost 3 games in a row this season so far and would be hoping to continue that run with a win on Saturday.
