New York Knicks fans haven’t had it this good in a long time. After all, they can celebrate their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 seasons after getting past the Boston Celtics 4-2. They won Game 6 at Madison Square Garden by a Knicks record 38 points. However, their fans had some deplorable actions to answer for in the aftermath of their win, one that has put a dark cloud above their festive spirit.
A fan in attendance wearing a Tyrese Haliburton jersey was accosted by a group of Knicks fans after they emerged from the arena. The mob bullied and jostled the fan, trash talking and throwing bags of trash at him.
A video of this incident emerged in the morning following the celebrations and has gone viral on NBA Twitter. As expected, the video evidence reflects very poorly in the face of the New York Knicks fanbase.

The Tyrese Haliburton fan in question was then overrun by a moving mob. He likely got beaten up and physically assaulted, although the spectator wisely did not attempt to get a video of it.
Basketball fans have united in their condemnation of this hostile act. A fan pointed out the lack of civility and critical thinking in this mob’s actions, “Jumping a dude because he’s wearing the jersey of a sports team you don’t like lmao…”

More fans had similar sentiments.
As a Knicks fan this is disgraceful. Can we celebrate winning while being respectful? Ffs.

NYC people don’t know how to act. Attacking people and businesses over a sports team.

Although few in number, a few fans didn’t step back in victim-blaming either. A fan had a funny but disturbing analogy to explain why the mob went so far with their actions, saying, “Wearing a pacers jersey in nyc is like being a Jew in N*zi Germany“.

that idiot is just asking for trouble, I don’t feel bad for him

A few fans also pledged to root against the Knicks fans after their actions last night.
That’s one reason Pacers will run them out of the court

Worst fans ever…Go Pacers !!

The scale of celebrations for the Knicks’ biggest playoff win this century was truly unprecedented. Aerial views near Madison Square Garden showed people milling out of their houses and into the streets in celebration.

With such festive vibes going around, this incident was completely avoidable and puts a dampener on the whole thing for neutral fans.
Tyrese Haliburton will look to carry on in Reggie Miller’s vein
The Pacers-Knicks rivalry of the ’90s and early 2000s was one of the defining basketball rivalries of the sport. Fans of both teams have had bad blood for each other, despite not meeting often in the playoffs since.
The Pacers have won their last two playoff series against the Knicks, with the last win coming in 2024. Haliburton and co. went seven games against a hobbled Knicks team in another war of attrition last year.
There will be scores to settle between the two teams and fanbases in the upcoming series. Jalen Brunson will have another chip on his shoulder after being snubbed for Team USA Basketball in favor of Haliburton last summer. The Knicks’ talisman is undoubtedly the better scorer, but Haliburton’s ability to push the pace will be the X-factor.
Basketball fans can expect a tactical battle between two experienced playoff coaches as well. Both Rick Carlisle and Tom Thibodeau have spent decades neutralizing their opponents’ best players.
They will have tricks up their sleeves to contain both point guards. While the Pacers are among the best-conditioned outfits, the Knicks’ playoff rotation has been in shape with heavy minutes duties through the season.
