Another chapter was added to the long-standing rivalry between Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark on Saturday night. Reese looked extremely unhappy after the Indiana Fever’s star point guard pushed her to the ground.

Clark quickly walked away from the scene as Reese confronted her with screaming words. Both Chicago Sky and Fever players stepped in to de-escalate the situation quickly.

Former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III watched the entire moment and concluded that Reese shouldn’t have retaliated. The emotionally charged 23-year-old let the nature of the foul get the better of her.

Griffin sided with Clark, but he claimed Reese’s reaction stemmed from her hatred for Clark. RG3 tweeted:

After watching Caitlin Clark’s flagrant foul on Angel Reese and the aftermath, there is no way Angel Reese can continue the lie that she doesn’t dislike Caitlin Clark. I know what hatred looks like. Angel Reese HATES Caitlin Clark. Not some basketball rivalry hate either. Hate.

Fever led by 14 points in the third quarter, and frustration had set in the Sky’s corner. Sky’s Rebecca Allen attempted a three-pointer to reduce the deficit with just over four minutes left in the quarter. Allen’s shot bounced off the basket, and Reese recovered the loose ball.

Clark was the nearest defender. Right before Reese went in to steal a basket, Clark slapped the ball out of her hands but fouled her in the process.

The microphone picked up Reese shouting “What the f*** is wrong with you” at Clark before the officials passed their verdict on the foul. The referee judged the foul on Reese as a flagrant grade one foul, which surprised the audience in the stands.

What did Caitlin Clark say about the foul?

The Sky chased the Fever most of the night. They upped the intensity level after the skirmish, but the team from Indiana proved too strong. The first game of the new WNBA season ended with the Fever winning 93-58.

Clark recorded 31 points, 12 assists, and four rebounds while making five threes on nine attempts. She also recorded the most blocks in week one in WNBA history.

After the game, reporters asked the former first overall pick to give her opinion on the foul. Caitlin Clark told the ESPN reporter:

Let’s not make it something that it’s not. It’s just a good take foul. Either Angel [Reese] gets a wide-open two points, or we send them to the free throw line. Nothing malicious about it. It’s just a good take foul. Every basketball player knows that.

Despite the L, Reese had a decent game as well. She scored 23 double-doubles, the most by a rookie in a single season. She now has 399 total rebounds on the year.

Reese was asked the same question. Without fussing too much about an answer, Reese told the Athletic’s James Boyd, “Basketball play. Refs got it right. Move on.”

Before the game, Clark received a big shoutout from the King of Basketball himself. Lakers star LeBron James posted a couple of photos on Instagram with a message. “Good Luck and do as per usual this season!!!”

The Fever remain at home in week two to welcome the Atlanta Dream to the crib. The Sky will host one of the favorites, the New York Liberty, at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.
