The new generation of UFC welterweights has been quite dominant, hunting down the veterans on most occasions with ruthless finishing instincts. Last night at UFC Vegas 106, Gilbert Burns yet again suffered another loss against rising and undefeated fighter Michael Morales in brutal fashion. The fight ended in the fourth minute of the first round with Burns getting brutally TKOed by the young fighter’s strikes.

The Ecuadorian prospect controlled distance with jabs and range strikes, using his significant reach advantage to frustrate Burns early in the round. The veteran attempted to close the distance and grapple, but Morales defended brilliantly, keeping the fight standing with precise footwork and balance. A perfectly timed right hand stunned Burns, and Morales capitalized instantly with a flurry of unanswered punches to finish him.

Referee intervention came at 3:39 of round one, as Morales’ barrage left the Brazilian unable to intelligently defend against the barrage of strikes. Morales’ mother was captured shouting at the top of her lungs, being energetic while watching his son dominate his opponent. The video has since gone viral, showcasing the love and support Morales’ mother had for him. 

The fighter resonated this emotion and talked in extension about his mother in the octagon interview with UFC legend Michael Bisping. According to Morales, his mother was the sole reason why he was fighting and winning bouts and he often listens to her. As it turns out, it was Morales’ mother’s input to focus on that right hand, which ended the bout. 

With this victory, the rising star remains unbeaten and will likely earn a top-five opponent in his next UFC welterweight matchup. He has beaten the likes of Neil Magny, Jake Matthews, and Max Griffin, with a top ten ranking almost certain. With his fighting style and knockout power, fans are excited to see the fighter get back inside the octagon soon.

Michael Morales calls for top welterweight contender 

The UFC welterweight division is extremely competitive, with elite athletes constantly challenging each other to rise and sharpen their skills. Belal Muhammad defeated Leon Edwards last year, displaying dominant grappling and control, cementing his reputation as a well-rounded, championship-level fighter. However, Muhammad later lost the title to Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315 by unanimous decision after a hard-fought battle.

On top of that, top contenders like Shavkat Rakhmonov and Sean Brady are aggressively chasing a long-awaited and well-deserved title opportunity. These rising stars are dominant grapplers, making life extremely difficult for pure strikers who lack the tools to handle ground-heavy pressure. Still, Michael Morales remains ambitious, recently calling out Ian Garry for a thrilling potential clash via UFC interview.

The Irishman, in his last bout, ended the winning streak of knockout artist Carlos Prates, who mirrored Morales’ undefeated rise. The Irishman continues evolving, often using sharp wrestling control to nullify dangerous strikers, proving he’s far more than just a flashy technician. However, with a title shot in sight, Garry might not see any benefit in facing someone ranked lower. 

Nevertheless, for Morales, defeating someone as experienced as Gilbert Burns was a huge milestone that showcased his maturity and skill development. Burns recently admitted losing focus after the Khamzat Chimaev fight, distracted by fame, financial success, and life outside the Octagon. Now on a four-fight losing streak at 38, many have questioned his position as a top fighter while casting doubt on Burns’ comeback.
