Former Dallas Cowboys star wide receiver Dez Bryant didn’t appreciate Robert Griffin III’s tone in attacking Angel Reese following the Chicago Sky’s loss against the Indiana Fever on day one of the 2025-26 WNBA season. Bryant argued that RG3 crossed a line by suggesting that Reese hated Fever’s Caitlin Clark.

Bryant wore the iconic number 88 for the Cowboys, a number currently owned by CeeDee Lamb, for eight years. Griffin, on the other hand, won the Heisman Trophy in college at Baylor and later suited up for the Washington Redskins (Commanders) and Baltimore Ravens.

Both players experienced the tension and the passion of playing a sport during their careers, so they know how to think like athletes. However, that doesn’t mean they will agree on everything. While Griffin viewed Angel Reese’s outburst against Caitlin Clark as racially motivated, Bryant only saw it as passion. Dez Bryant tweeted:

Both girls are good in their own right.. Caitlin Clark is better than Angel Reese..but saying she hates her is wild. They are playing basketball.. bro. It was nothing more or less. You are helping create a negative narrative around Angel Reese..and I don’t respect it, respectfully. You know this is tied into race..and the way you’re playing it is wild. We gotta do better.

In the third quarter of Saturday’s game between the Fever and Sky, Clark fouled Reese, leading to a heated argument. The referee gave Reese the benefit of the doubt, but the former seventh overall was livid with Clark.

Griffin wasn’t ready to throw in the towel. He stood by his earlier assessment and fired back at Bryant for calling him out on social media.

Respectfully, Angel Reese said she is the villain, refused to answer questions about Caitlin Clark and has celebrated flagrant fouls on Caitlin Clark. I’m not helping create anything. Angel Reese has fed into this with her actions. She needs to do better.

Bryant wasn’t the only big name who went after Griffin for siding with Clark. Another former NFL wide receiver wasn’t a fan of RG3’s assessment either.

Torrey Smith, who won multiple Super Bowls in his NFL career, claimed the referee was correct to announce a flagrant foul against Clark. In reply, Griffin compared Reese with Golden State Warriors Draymond Green, who has a history of acting out on the court.

Angel Reese is the WNBA’s Draymond. Caitlin Clark is Michael Jordan. It shouldn’t have been a flagrant foul and no one says Caitlin Clark hates Angel Reese because we have no evidence pointing to that. WE HAVE A TON OF EXAMPLES showing Angel Reese hates Caitlin Clark.

Griffin wrote on X

On the surface, the situation may appear as racially motivated. However, neither Clark nor Reese seemed to be affected by the off-field chatter.

After the game, reporters asked Reese for a reaction, and she nonchalantly said Clark’s push was a ‘basketball play’ and requested everyone to move on.
