If anyone deserved a contract extension this offseason for their contributions to football, then it was Nick Sirianni. The Jamestown, New York, native took a struggling Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl glory in just four years after owner Jeffery Lurie gave him the steering wheel.

It’s not that Sirianni has vast experience coaching NFL teams—absolutely not. The 43-year-old spent several years as the offensive coordinator for various teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts, but the Eagles were the first team to allow Sirianni to become a head coach.

On Monday, the Eagles decided Sirianni is the right man for the job. They officially agreed to a multi-year deal with Nick Sirianni.

Nick [Sirianni] has embodied everything we were looking for in a head coach since we hired him four years ago. His authentic style of leadership, football intelligence, passion for the game, and growth mindset have helped to bring out the best in our team. I am excited for what the future holds for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jeffery Lurie said in his statement

Details about Nick Sirianni’s new contract with the Eagles

Lurie appointed Sirianni in 2021, and he signed a five-year, $35 million deal. Sirianni’s contract was about to expire when the Eagles opted to award him with an extension.

Lurie, during the NFL owners’ meeting last month, hinted that the Eagles were discussing Sirianni’s contract right after their Super Bowl LIX triumph in New Orleans.

The details of Sirianni’s new contract remain under lock and key. However, it might end up being similar to or better than first-time head coach Ben Johnson’s at the Chicago Bears. NBC Sports reported that Johnson signed a $13 million per year contract with the Bears. Sirianni currently earns $7 million/year, so he’s bound to see a significant jump in the numbers.

Sirianni signing a new deal is not surprising at all. He joined Joe Gibbs with the Washington Redskins (1982 and 1983) and Mike Tomlin with the Pittsburgh Steelers (2008 and 2010) as only the third head coach to reach multiple Super Bowls with the same team in the first four years of their NFL career. Moreover, he became only the fifth coach to qualify for the postseason every year they have been in the gig.

With great success comes great attention. Although Sirianni may still be in Philadelphia, other NFL clubs have taken members of his coaching staff. After the Eagles’ Super Bowl run in the 2022-23 season, the Colts appointed former offensive coordinator Shane Steichen as their head coach, while the Arizona Cardinals brought in defensive coordinator Johnathan Gannon as their head honcho.

The trend continued this year as well. After lifting the franchise’s first-ever Lombardi Trophy (in their fourth attempt), the New Orleans Saints appointed last season’s offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore, as their head coach. The Eagles replaced Moore with passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo.

Astonishingly, Patullo will be quarterback Jalen Hurts’ fourth OC since entering the NFL in 2020. Hurts adapted to every challenge thrown at him, especially last year when the Eagles switched to a run-heavy game because of All-Pro running back Saquon Barkley. Barkley rushed for the league-best and franchise-record 2000+ yards on the ground.

This further proved Nick Sirianni’s leadership qualities. Modern-day NFL relies more on the receivers instead of the running back. Sirianni was able to keep their two best WRs, AJ Brown and Devonta Smith, who signed extensions last year, under control even after they were fed fewer chances. Only a true leader is capable of pulling off something like that. The Eagles are fortunate to have Sirianni.
