Since it determines who the best player of the 82-game regular season was—and possibly the best player in the world—the NBA MVP title is one of the most widely anticipated honors in all of sports. Nikola Jokic won the prize for the third time in the previous four seasons just last season. However, this season, there’s a new name going toe to toe with Jokic, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s star man, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Not only going toe-to-toe, SGA is tipped to win the NBA MVP award ahead of Jokic this 2024-25 NBA season. The NBA MVP award announcement date for this season has not yet been made by the league. Nonetheless, the award is typically given out in the NBA playoffs between the first and second rounds. However, per The Athletic, the NBA MVP award winner will be announced today, with SGA leading the race.

He played in 76 games and averaged a career-high 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.0 blocks in 34.2 minutes per game. SGA has played in the NBA for seven seasons.

So, how is the MVP winner decided? A group of broadcasters and sportswriters vote for their top five MVP contenders to determine the NBA MVP. Each voter is stated to allocate points according to the ranking, with 10 points awarded for first place, 7 for second, and 1 for fifth, which is the final position and only worth one point. In the end, the NBA MVP trophy is awarded to the player with the highest count.

Per the NBA, the top candidates for the MVP award are: Shai Gilgeous Alexander– Thunder, Nikola Jokic-Nuggets, Giannis Antetokounmpo-Bucks, Jayson Tatum-Celtics, LeBron James-Lakers. Although it comes down to two stars, SGA and Jokic, who have divided the voting list. It remains to be seen who wins the decorated award in a few hours.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made his thoughts clear after his side’s Game 1 win

During Game 1, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was observed lying on the ground with his hands behind his head while head coach Mark Daigneault spoke to his team. He surely got a lot of slack from the NBA community for his body language. His response: dropping 31 points to lead his side to a crucial win and hush the critics.

In addition, SGA made his views clear on leading his side to victory against the Timberwolves.

Yeah, it’s just true to my personality. Not always the loudest guy in the room or say too much. But my energy and effort and what I put on the floor speaks louder than anything. That’s just how I try to not only like, go about the game but go about life. Actions always mean louder than words, to me, especially. So, that’s just how I go about it.

Shai’s ability to remain unaffected by hardships is what makes him so deadly. He had a poor start even in Game 1, shooting only two of thirteen in the first half. However, rather than giving up, the superstar recovered and assisted the Thunder in defeating the Nuggets 32–18 in the third quarter.

Former Nuggets HC Michael Malone picked Shai Gilgeous-Alexander over Nikola Jokic, leaving fans stunned

Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals saw the Oklahoma City Thunder upset the Minnesota Timberwolves 114-88 on Tuesday. Despite having been kept silent in the first half, Thunder sensation Shai Gilgeous-Alexander once again put on a game-winning effort. Notably, former Nuggets HC Michael Malone made his ESPN debut on Tuesday.

Malone well and truly made waves on his first day with ESPN. This was when he called the Thunder star ‘the MVP’ over his former player, Nikola Jokic. This left the NBA community stunned because just months ago he was supporting Jokic to win the award.

Obviously, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a great player, and if he wins his first MVP, he’s deserving of that.

Michael Malone said

Malone’s remarks do make sense as SGA has been a clear difference in Game 1 of this series. His 31 points earned his side an important win in the WCF Finals. Now, its just a matter of time until SGA gets awarded with the 2025 NBA MVP award.
