Danielle Collins went on a furious rant at a camera operator during the Strasbourg Open fourth-round match against Emma Raducanu. During a changeover, the camera operator was standing too close to the players, and this irked the American ace.

She got up from her seat and confronted him while filling her water bottle. Collins wanted the cameraman to stop filming her as well as Raducanu during the changeover. She said:

I need to get water. We’re on a changeover. You don’t need to be that close to me and you don’t need to be on top of Emma. It’s like wildly inappropriate. Not that difficult to give space.

Despite Collins’ rant, the cameraman kept filming them before eventually veering the camera toward the court. The 31-year-old went on to win the match with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 scoreline to set up a quarterfinal clash with Anna Kalinskaya.

It was Collins’ first encounter with Raducanu in her career. Raducanu, who is searching for her first title since winning the 2021 US Open, previously produced her best clay-court performance at the Italian Open by reaching the fourth round (lost to eventual runner-up Coco Gauff), had knocked out World No.17 Daria Kasatkina in her opening-round match.

Collins has met her quarterfinal opponent Kalinskaya twice, winning both the matches. Both these players are searching for their first title of the season. Before setting up the match against the former World No.7, Kalinskaya knocked out last year’s US Open finalist Jessica Pegula.

This season, only once Raducanu was successful in winning four consecutive matches (her best since the 2021 US Open). At the Miami Open, she reached the quarterfinals but lost to eventual runner-up Pegula.

Emma Raducanu reveals what she thinks of Danielle Collins’ behavior

Danielle Collins is one of those players who doesn’t shy away from being vocal about what’s in her mind. Often because of this, she has invited controversy.

Last year during their quarterfinal match at the Paris Olympics, she called World No.5 Iga Swiatekinsincere“. This year during the United Cup final, a clip of her rolling her eyes during the customary handshake with the five-time Grand Slam champion did rounds on social media. She later took a screenshot and made it her Instagram profile picture.

Then, after her victory in the Australian Open second round against home favorite Destanee Aiava, Collins blew kisses toward the booing crowd and also slapped her back. In Strasbourg against Emma Raducanu, Collins became more animated during the deciding set. Her behavior, however, did not annoy Raducanu, who said at the press conference that it’s normal for players to fight for each point.

For me, I don’t mind it. It’s just competition. We are trying to fight for each point. I kind of expect it from her as well. Off the court, we are both cool. We can talk and have conversations but on the court, we are both trying to win. I don’t think that gets to my head, which is a good thing. It could maybe affect other players but I felt pretty good.

While Collins will continue to be focusing on the WTA 500 tournament, Raducanu will be gearing up for the French Open, which starts on May 25th. The former World No.10 has never progressed beyond the second round of the clay-court Major and has not yet played the tournament since 2022.

Collins, on the other hand, is a quarterfinalist in the second Major of the season. She reached the last eight in 2020 and lost the match to compatriot Sofia Kenin. Last year, she lost in the second round to Serbia’s Olga Danilovic.
