The San Francisco 49ers did the unthinkable this offseason by signing three blockbuster deals, including extending quarterback Brock Purdy‘s stay until 2030. Purdy agreed to a $265M deal, but there was room for more.

However, the 25-year-old who will play his fourth year of pro football revealed that he took less money than he initially demanded. According to sources, Purdy’s agent wanted a $65 million/year contract. It would have made him the highest-paid quarterback in NFL history—$5 million more than Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott.

A couple of days after signing the biggest player deal in 49ers’ history, Purdy claimed that he took a pay cut so that John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan could build a Super Bowl-winning team.

I know who I am and I’m gonna, obviously, want to get what I deserve, but also surround myself with guys around me and not just try to take every penny for myself. That’s the whole point of negotiating. You go through that and try to meet in a middle ground. Where we ended, man, I’m extremely grateful and happy with.

Well, Purdy’s contract is not quite in the same ballpark as $65 million, but rather $53 million. It’s still a lot of money. As a matter of fact, Purdy entered the top 10 highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

Fans on social media believe this was a mistake by the 49ers, considering Purdy’s performance took a nosedive in 2024. The Niners finished at the bottom of the NFC West with a 6-11 record. However, general manager Lynch green-lit the deal due to Purdy’s potential as a quarterback. He led the Bay Area franchise to consecutive NFL Championship appearances and a Super Bowl berth in his first two seasons.

On the flip side, the Niners didn’t view Purdy as a $65 million player who could reset the market. In fact, in an interview on the Unsportsmanlike podcast, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed that no team inquired about a trade for Purdy in the offseason.

I remember talking to teams and just being like…as they were trying to solve their quarterback needs, ‘Any interest in Brock Purdy?’ And they were like, ‘Great player, but he’s a great player for [the 49ers]’.

Now, even if Purdy claims that he took a pay cut for the team’s sake—which could easily be true—the 49ers didn’t have an alternative, so they agreed to a five-year $265 million extension with $182.55 million guaranteed, of which $100 million is fully guaranteed at signing.

While Purdy’s deal may sound very mouthwatering, Lynch skillfully added a couple of loopholes to keep the ball in the 49ers’ court. For instance, Over the Cap revealed that if Purdy is on the Niners’ roster on April 1, 2026, his 2027 salary is guaranteed. They can easily rework a new deal.

However, the 49ers don’t need to do anything. They can easily cut Purdy after the 2026 season at the minimum cost of $30.8 million and $57.6 million against the salary cap in 2027 and 2028. Eventually, the Niners will be left with a $15 million dead-cap hit in 2029. They can easily digest that.
