Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is not someone who would get surprised easily, but at Game 2 of the WCF Finals, he surely did get surprised. Notably, SGA opened up on a hilarious incident involving his ‘supportive wife’ and his former friend and teammate, Chris Paul. The Thunder star claimed that he had to do a ‘double-take’ in this situation.

He was undoubtedly taken aback when he saw his wife sitting next to another individual during the Thunder’s 118-103 victory against the Timberwolves in Game 2 of the conference finals. Luckily for SGA, Paul was the man in question. In addition, the Thunder star joked that it took him a moment to realize who the person was.

Caught me off guard. I had to double take. I was like 'Who is that sitting with my wife?' I got a little tight but then I seen it was Chris [Paul] I was like 'Alright, cool'.

Paul, a 12-time NBA All-Star, was one of the people who watched his former Thunder teammate lift the Michael Jordan Trophy at Paycom Center. Before the game began, Paul even made an appearance on ESPN’s pregame show to say a few kind things about the “selfless” Gilgeous-Alexander.

In a transaction that allowed Paul George to join Kawhi Leonard, Oklahoma City acquired Gilgeous-Alexander from the Los Angeles Clippers nine days before the Thunder acquired Paul from the Houston Rockets. In addition to CP3, Gilgeous-Alexander’s scoring average soared in his debut season with the Thunder.

As a rookie, he averaged 10.8 points per game; now, he leads the Thunder in scoring with 19.0 points per game. This showcases the work and mentorship Paul put in on SGA to make him the player that he is now at the Thunder.

Chris Paul once opened up on his bond with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

For the first time, Chris Paul was apart from his family during his stint with Oklahoma City. SGA made sure to visit Paul’s OKC residence after each home match to keep him company since he understood how hard it was to be apart from his loved ones. Paul left his family in Canada to follow his NBA Dream. The two became close friends as a result.

I try not to get emotional when I talk about Shai, man. Because that was my first year living without my family, without my wife and my kids in LA. And, man, Shai, he's just a basketball head, right? You show me somebody who loves basketball and crazy about their family, then me and them gonna be tight.

Aside from this, Paul assisted the Phoenix Suns in reaching the NBA Finals following his impressive stint in Oklahoma City. The veteran guard, who is currently 40, just finished an 82-game season with the Spurs. It remains to be seen how Paul performs in the NBA next season with the upcoming Spurs side.

One thing is clear: as long as Paul is present in the NBA, players like SGA will surely seek all the basketball insights from the NBA veteran.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s father, Vaughn Alexander, opened up on his son’s MVP achievement

Gilgeous-Alexander, a 26-year-old Hamilton native, took home the NBA MVP honor for the first time on Wednesday night. Additionally, a player who was born outside of the United States has now earned MVP for seven consecutive years, which is the longest streak in league history. However, it was his father, Vaughn Alexander, who stole the headlines for his take on his son’s achievement.

I can't say that I knew this was going to happen or this is what we [had] written... These guys are the type of guys that dream big and they're always doing these little mini games and series against each other and they had that in their mind that, you know, 'we're going to do something one day.'

Interestingly, Vaughn Alexander coached his son and his cousin, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, when they were kids. Alexander-Walker currently plays for the Timberwolves, SGA’s current WCF Finals opponents. So, it’s cousin vs. cousin in the family at the moment. For now, the Thunder are 2-0 up in the series, so it will be interesting to watch if Alexander-Walker and Co. bounce back.
