Carlos Alcaraz has been playing his best tennis since the start of the clay season. He has continued with the form at the French Open, where he has now won five consecutive matches to reach the semi-finals. His coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, has now analyzed his performance at the tournament.
Alcaraz’s goal at the Roland Garros is to lift the title for the second time in a row in the French capital. He has displayed since the start of the tournament how eager he is to achieve it, beating the likes of Fabian Marozsan, Damir Dzumhur, and Ben Shelton in four sets while crushing Tommy Paul in the quarter-finals.
However, Alcaraz’s goal to claim the title won’t be easy, as he’s set to face Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals. The Italian star is one of the toughest players to face on the clay court. In fact, he has been to the semi-finals of each of his last three tournaments.
He also troubled Alcaraz when they both faced each other at the Monte Carlo final. The Italian led the first set before the Spaniard rallied from behind to win the match. They met again in Rome in the semi-final, and the 22-year-old defeated the Italian for the second time. Alcaraz leads their head-to-head record 5-1 ahead of their meeting on Friday (June 6).
During an interview, Juan Carlos Ferrero was asked about Alcaraz’s performance at the Roland Garros. The Spaniard revealed to Eurosport that he has taken a leap in the quality of his game and also explained about his approach against tricky players at the tournament:
He's playing very well. He has taken a leap in quality for the way he has surpassed Tommy Paul. It is true that the match with Ben Shleton gave us a clear idea of the things he should and should not do. In yesterday's match, we asked him to play more aggressively and we saw it from the first game. He has always been very demanding, and I believe this is good because the standards he sets for himself push him one step further.
Alcaraz is currently the favorite to win the Roland Garros even though he has dropped three sets at the competition. He has lost only one match on clay this season and has been outstanding against tough opponents. His only loss on the red dirt was against Holger Rune in the Barcelona Open final.
Juan Carlos Ferrero hails Carlos Alcaraz’s mental strength at the Roland Garros
Carlos Alcaraz showed he has progressed mentally in his game when he faced Bosnian star Damir Dzumhur in the third round. The Spaniard had won the two opening sets, but lost the third set and was down 2-4 in the fourth before rallying back into the tie to win the match in four sets. During the aforementioned interview, Juan Carlos Ferrero said that Alcaraz’s progress mentally has been based on the work he has been carrying out for some time:
The mental side is something we’ve tried to work on with him for a long time. Routines, ways of behaving on court, how to pick himself up when he’s in trouble, pre-match chats, chats the day before, preparations for matches…

Alcaraz has a potential clash against Jannik Sinner at the Roland Garros final. The Spaniard defeated the World No.1 in the semi-final of the tournament last year in five sets, showing impressive athleticism to take down the Italian.
