After skipping the media interviews on all 4 days of the 2025 PGA Championship, Rory McIlroy finally spoke to the media on Wednesday. During the RBC Canadian Open press conference, the 5-time major champion admitted that he was “pissed off” following the “leaked” driver incident at the major championship.

The Northern Irish golfer headed to the Quail Hollow course in North Carolina, a place where he had won 4 times in his career, as the reigning Masters Champion. However, things got off to a rough start in the second major as his driver was found to be non-conforming.

As a result of the surprise testing by the PGA Tour, McIlroy was forced to change his driver. He ended up having a tough time on the course and finished T47, 3-over par for the tournament.

In the RBC Canadian Open presser, the grand slam winner expressed that someone from the media “leaked” the confidential results. Along with him, Scottie Scheffler‘s driver was also found to be non-conforming. However, Scheffler’s incident came to light after he won the tournament unlike McIlroy.

Yeah, look, the PGA was a bit of a weird week. I didn’t play well… I was a little pissed off because I knew that Scottie’s driver had failed on Monday, but my name was the one that was leaked. It was supposed to stay confidential. Two members of the media were the ones that leaked it.

McIlroy further added that this was the reason he did not go up and speak, as he was trying to protect Scheffler, TaylorMade, the USGA, the PGA of America, and himself. He did not want to say something which he would regret later and thus decided not to speak with the media.

Rory McIlroy reveals why he snubbed the Memorial Tournament last week

Last week, Rory McIlroy found himself on the receiving end of some backlash as he snubbed Jack Nicklaus and decided not to participate in the Memorial Tournament. On Wednesday, he spoke on this matter as well.

While speaking with Golf Channel’s Kira K. Dixon, the golfer pointed out his age as the reason for skipping this event.

I just wanted to do what was best for me looking towards the U.S. Open. I’ve realised I’m not 25 anymore, I’m 36. For a 36-year-old, there’s a lot of miles on the clock and I just don’t want to play four weeks in a row at this point in my career.

Following the RBC Canadian Open, the golfers on the PGA Tour will turn their attention towards the U.S. Open next week at Oakmont. McIlroy suffered a late collapse in their event last year and ended up losing the major championship by finishing 1 shot behind winner, Bryson DeChambeau.

Apart from being a member of the PGA Tour, McIlroy also competes on the DP World Tour. The 2-time winner of this event was presented a customized Toronto Maple Leafs jersey by Keith Pelley, who now works as the CEO of the Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment (MLSE).

McIlroy would also speak on the chances of the Maple Leafs winning the Stanley Cup. The golfer hilariously expressed that if he could win the Masters Tournament, then the Maple Leafs will surely win the Cup once again.

The Leafs suffered another failure this year as they got knocked out of the playoffs by the Florida Panthers. The Canadian-based outfit, who last won the cup in 1967, got crushed 6-1 in Game 7 of the second round and were left empty-handed once again.
