Rory McIlroy had an outing to forget at the TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley during the 2025 RBC Canadian Open. The golfer missed the cut in this event following a disastrous second-round score of 78. With the U.S. Open next week, the golfer admitted that he was a bit ‘concerned‘ by this.

McIlroy’s form has been a mixed one this season. He started off the season strong and won the Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and The Players Championship in March.

In April, the Northern Irishman got his hands on the trophy that he had been fighting for a long time. The 36-year-old won the Masters Tournament at the Augusta National and clinched the green jacket. Since then, his form has dipped a bit.

After failing to defend the title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, he struggled at the PGA Championship as well and finished T47 in the 2nd major of the year. Ahead of the U.S. Open at Oakmont next week, McIlroy ended up missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open.

In the second round of the event, McIlroy made 4 bogeys, 1 double bogey, and 1 quad bogey. His score of 78 was one of the worst he had performed in a while. This marked the first time since the 2024 Open Championship where he failed to make the cut after two rounds.

While speaking to the reporters after the round, the 5-time major champion admitted that he was a bit ‘concerned‘ with his performance from this tournament.

Of course it concerns me. You don’t want to shoot high scores like the one I did today. I felt like I came here, obviously with a new driver, thinking that sort of was going to be good and solve some of the problems off the tee, but it didn’t… When I get that part of the game clicking, then everything falls into place for me. Right now that isn’t. Yeah, that’s a concern going into next week.

McIlroy was not the only big name that missed the cut, though. Justin Rose, who finished as the runner-up to him in the Masters Tournament, was among those who missed the cut. Max Homa was another one who failed to secure his status of playing over the weekend.

Rory McIlroy admitted that he was having some lack of motivation these days after winning the Masters Tournament

For a long time, the Masters Tournament was one event that had eluded Rory McIlroy. Following his dramatic collapse in the 2011 edition, this event was one that he wanted to win the most. After he finally achieved his dream, there seems to be some lack of motivation for him.

In the press conference before the RBC Canadian Open, the former World No.1 did admit that he was having a lack of motivation after claiming the green jacket. He seemingly admitted that it had been tough for him to grind for long hours after he finally achieved his dream.

You have this event in your life that you’ve worked towards and it happens, sometimes it’s hard to find the motivation to get back on the horse and go again.

McIlroy’s triumph at the Augusta National this year also broke an 11-year major title drought. After winning the 2014 PGA Championship, the golfer had been struggling in the majors. His win broke that streak and saw him become the 6th player to complete the career grand slam.

He will now somehow need to find motivation if he wants to perform better next week. In the previous 2 U.S. Open tournaments, he has finished as the runner-up, finishing one stroke behind Wyndham Clark in 2023 and Bryson DeChambeau in 2024.
