Brad Marchand turned out to be the hero for the Florida Panthers in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup final against the Edmonton Oilers. Following the game, one of his former rival and ex-NHL goaltender shared a 5-word message on social media.

Earlier this season, the NHL world received a major shock as Marchand was traded away from the Boston Bruins. The Canadian international had spent 16 seasons with the team. In March this year, Marchand was officially traded to the Panthers in exchange of a 2nd round conditional pick in the 2027 draft.

The move for now seems to have worked out well for the Panthers. While the Bruins failed to make it to the playoffs, the Panthers are playing in their 3rd successive final.

In Game 2, the Panthers were once again pegged back by the Oilers. In the dying moments of the game, veteran Corey Perry found the net to make it 4-4 and force another overtime. After the first OT failed to generate a winning moment, a double overtime was required.

Marchand, who had already scored a short-handed goal earlier in the game, would go on to score another one. He broke away and somehow squeezed the puck beyond Stuart Skinner in 2OT to give the Panthers a 5-4 win.

Following his heroics in Game 2, former NHL goalie and current special advisor to Panthers GM Bill Zito, Roberto Luongo, dropped a 5-word message on X. The former Vancouver Canucks star seemed to have buried the hatchet with Marchand now.

Favorite player of all time

Ever since his move to the Panthers, Luongo seems to have become a fan of Marchand. The two of them did not share the same vibes in 2011 though.

During the Stanley Cup finals that year, a rookie Marchand would score 5 goals against him in the best-of-seven series that year. His contributions were key as the Bruins came back and won the Stanley Cup and broke the hearts of Luongo and the Canucks.

Brad Marchand’s mom was left hyped up after his 2OT winner

Brad Marchand stole the headlines in Game 2 with his 2OT winner. His breakaway goal in this period silenced the home crowd as the Florida Panthers leveled the series. While majority of the people in the Rogers Place were left stunned and sat quietly, Marchand’s mother Lynn was left super hyped up.

In a video shared by the NHL on their X account, his mother could be seen screaming and clapping proudly as he celebrated with his teammates on the ice. Check out her reaction below:

In the press conference after the game, Marchand was asked about his reaction to his mother’s reaction and how much of a hockey mom she was. The former Boston Bruins captain would proceed to make a light-hearted joke about her.

She’s one you need to put a muzzle on. She gets pretty amped up at the games.

Brad Marchand scripted unique NHL history following 2OT winner in Game 2

After losing Game 1 in overtime through a Leon Draisaitl goal, the Florida Panthers punched back with an overtime winner of their own. Brad Marchand’s 2OT goal turned out to be the difference in this game. He also scripted a unique piece of NHL history with that goal.

Marchand had earlier scored a short-handed goal to make it 4-3 for the Panthers in the third period. He then scored in the 2OT period. He thus became the first player in NHL history to score a short-handed goal in regulation time and then an overtime winner in the same game.

It also turned out to be Marchand’s fifth overtime goal, tied for the third most in Stanley Cup playoffs history. He now has 63 playoff goals, the 4th most among active players, only behind Evgeni Malkin (67), Sidney Crosby (71), and Alex Ovechkin (77).

This game was also just the 6th time when the first two games of the Stanley Cup final needed overtime. Game 3 will take place at the Amerant Arena in Florida on Monday, June 9.
