A narrative of the 2024 WNBA season was about how much its increased popularity had to do with Angel Reese. The Bayou Barbie boasts of nearly 5 million followers on Instagram and millions more across other social media. She clearly has a digital footprint bigger than most other WNBA players before she made it as a pro. But the question always has been if the hype around her is about basketball or other stuff.

It seems that the 2025 WNBA season is giving fans an unflattering answer to this question. Through seven games, Reese is averaging 9.1 points per game. This is 33% lower than her 2024 figure of 13.6 ppg. The Sky forward is averaging 21% fewer shot attempts, but her field goal percentage sits at a beggarly 30.9%. She is among the most inefficient players in WNBA history. Her 3p% of 33.3% is higher than her field goal percentage.

Her increased ball-handling due to a more pass-happy Sky offense has given her more opportunities to facilitate. However, while her assists have shot up to 2.6 from 1.9 per game, her turnovers are also up. The number has risen 69% from 2.2 per game to 3.7 in the 2025 WNBA season. She is averaging more offensive boards (5.1 to 5.6), but many of them are off her own missed shot attempts.

Angel Reese’s latest performance in a home game against the Indiana Fever added to this critique. The Sky forward played 27 minutes against the Caitlin Clark-less team but could only take 7 shot attempts. She made only two of those attempts and had no steals or blocks. Her two assists were accompanied by three turnovers. None of the Sky players touched double digits in a demoralizing 79-52 loss at United Center.

While it is difficult to pin the blame for this loss on Reese, the Sky’s performances this year have shown that they are a basement team. They have no scoring talent and are unable to establish an identity on either end of the floor. They have two frontcourt talents who are unable to mesh with each other due to a lack of spacing. Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese, at this point, have no shot of being a plus frontcourt.

WNBA fans roast Angel Reese for coming a cropper against Indiana

The WNBA has positioned much of its marketing as Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese. It requires both of these players to be great players and make for great viewership to last as a defining feature of the league. But it seems Reese is not pulling her weight in this purported rivalry. With Clark out for this game, the Sky had an opportunity to capitalize on their weakened offense and tighten the screws defensively.

Instead, they got run out of their own building in a humiliating loss by 27 points. There was no phase of the game when they looked even close to a competent WNBA team. Angel Reese faced the brunt of the internet’s exasperation with their inability to hang with Indiana on national television. It didn’t help her cause that she walked into the game with a loud outfit, giving critics more ammunition to blast her with.

Neither did her propensity to throw up Hail Mary shots instead of improving her layup technique and raise her release point.

The Chicago Sky need to find a way to become a respectable, functioning WNBA team. They are clearly short of talent, but they need to free up Kamila Cardoso as a scorer to stand a chance of winning games. This would mean reducing Reese’s minutes and running Cardoso alongside a shooter at the 4 spot.
