In a massive shock to the system, the Boston Red Sox on Sunday night announced the departure of one of their top players, Rafael Devers. The Dominican international got traded to the San Francisco Giants in a deal that sent shockwaves across the MLB community.

Devers had been in the spotlight all season following some huge comments. The player first refused to yield the third base position after the signing of Alex Bregman. In the end, he was forced to accept the Designated Hitter (DH) role with the team.

Things got more heated between him and the organization when he refused to play at first base as well. After Triston Casas got injured, the team would approach him as an option for this position. Once he refused to do it, a few rumors did spark up about him getting traded away.

On Sunday, the 28-year-old hit his 31st home run against the New York Yankees. In the bottom of the 5th inning, he connected on a four-seam pitch by Max Fried to make it a 2-0 ballgame. His side ended up winning the game and swept the Yankees in the process.

A few hours later, the news of him being traded came out. As per insider Robert Murray, the team traded him to the SF Giants in exchange of right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, left-handed pitcher Kyle Harrison, Jose Bello and James Tibbs III.

Devers was in the second year of his massive 10-year, $313.5 million contract extension with the Red Sox, which he had signed in 2023. The Giants will take on all of his contract, which is reported to be around $250 million from here on to 2033.

Fans on social media were left shell-shocked by this development. This move ignited some mixed reactions from fans, with some of them taking a swipe at the organization. One user wrote, “This is mookie all over again” while recalling the trade of Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020.

Check out that and some other reactions from X below:

Devers finished his tenure with the Red Sox while batting with a .279 average, hitting 215 home runs, and drove in 696 runs. For the 2025 season, he has a .272 batting average, hit 15 home runs, and has 58 RBI to his name.

Rafael Devers become latest big name to be traded by the Boston Red Sox

One of the biggest trades the Red Sox made in recent years was Mookie Betts. The American International, who was the AL MVP in 2018 and played a huge role in the Red Sox’s World Series triumph that year, was traded away to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020.

Since then, Betts has won the World Series on two more occasions and has become an integral member of the Dodgers’ batting lineup.

The biggest trade in Red Sox history remains Babe Ruth. The team shockingly traded away “The Bambino” to their arch-rivals, the New York Yankees in 1919. He went on to become one of the greatest players of all time and achieved huge success with the Bronx Bombers while the Red Sox went on a long championship drought.

Only time will tell how this move will work out for both Devers and the Red Sox. The San Francisco Giants will welcome the Red Sox to the Oracle Park this weekend, giving Devers an early reunion with his former team.
