Patrick Mahomes’ Head-to-Head Super Bowl Stats with Jalen Hurts Paints a Very Different Picture

Jalen Hurts deserves all the credit for becoming only the second quarterback to stop Patrick Mahomes from winning a Super Bowl besides future Hall of Famer Tom Brady.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl victory in New Orleans changed fans’ perceptions of Jalen Hurts. He defeated Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, who has reached five Super Bowls in six seasons.

One of those wins came against Hurts and the Eagles in Super Bowl LVII. However, a recent stat from CBS Sports that combined the data from the two Super Bowls between Hurts and Mahomes revealed a different story.

Hurts outperformed Mahomes on both occasions. The Chiefs quarterback mustered a combined 439 passing yards, 69 rushing yards, 6 touchdowns, and three turnovers. Meanwhile, Hurts threw 500+ yards and rushed more than double compared to Mahomes (142 yards) and completed 7 touchdowns.

While these metrics are oversimplified, it’s unfair to deny that Hurts was the better quarterback than Mahomes in both Super Bowls. In their first meeting, the game was decided by a Harrison Butker 27-yard field goal, giving the Chiefs a win by three points.

The story of the second outing was very different. Hurts gave the Eagles a 34-point unanswered lead, ending with a total of 40 points. Mahomes orchestrated a minor comeback charge near the end, but a win was out of the Chiefs’ reach. The final score was 40-22.

Hurts took home the Super Bowl MVP trophy even though running back Saquon Barkley ruled the league the entire year.

Despite winning the Super Bowl, Jalen Hurts barely cracks the top 5 in PFF rankings

Usually, a quarterback who recently became Super Bowl MVP on top of winning the big game ends up topping the charts in every quarterback ranking. Hurts is an anomaly.

The Pro Bowler was nowhere near close to winning the league MVP title that eventually went to Bills quarterback Josh Allen, while Barkley took home the Offensive Player of the Year accolade.

The outcomes hinted that experts did not view Hurts in the same bracket as Allen, Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, or Joe Burrow. Pro Football Focus’ latest QB rankings reflect the same.

[Eagles] Jalen Hurts’ 2024 campaign [was] capped by an impressive Super Bowl run—a return to form after a turbulent 2023 season. A year earlier [in the 2023 season], Hurts too often pressed in high-leverage moments and struggled under pressure, but he flipped the script this past season, showing poise and control even when things broke down around him. After a slow start, he found his rhythm and delivered when it mattered most. Over the past three seasons, his 91.5 overall grade ranks fifth among all quarterbacks.

Pro Football Focus wrote

Even though Mahomes’ form dipped compared to his previous years, PFF still chose him as the best quarterback in the NFL, followed by Burrow, Jackson, and Allen.

Hurts should avoid worrying too much about yearly rankings and keep delivering match-winning performances every week. Winning Lombardi’s is more important than being named the MVP, and always falling short of the ultimate prize, like Lamar and Allen.

He should enjoy the moment with his new wife and must remember that he’s the seventh NFL QB to appear in multiple Super Bowls and win a championship in their first five seasons. The other quarterbacks are Troy Aikman, Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Ben Roethlisberger, Kurt Warner, and Russell Wilson. Not even Aaron Rodgers or Matthew Stafford is part of that illustrious group of players.
