NASCAR headed to Mexico the past weekend to compete at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. This was the debut of the Cup Series in Mexico City. Outside the garage, Spire Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar caused massive controversy for his comments on the Central American country. Now, the 22-year-old has apologized for his comments.
Mexico is infamous for its crime records. The country faces a massive problem of organized crime and cartels, making many reluctant to travel to Mexico City. During a Twitch livestream, Carson Hocevar was asked about his time in the country, to which, he gave a rather blunt answer.
In the stream, the Spire Motorsports driver had claimed that wished to have felt ‘safer’ while travelling within the city. Hocevar reckoned that he felt locked down due to the safety issues in the nation’s capital. Unsurprisingly, these comments were met with widespread backlash, forcing the 22-year-old to issue a statement.
On X, Carson Hocevar clarified that he should not have commented on another country when it was his first time outside the US during the race weekend. The No. 77 driver claimed that his comments on the stream were based on things that he had read about Mexico City, from people who might’ve never been there in the first place.
Maybe a kid that had never been out of the country until Thursday should ever give an opinion about what any place is like other than Portage, Michigan. When I answered that question on a stream, I was skeptical about the trip so far and believed everything I read or heard about Mexico City from people who more than likely also had never been here.
Carson Hocevar wrote on X.
Hocevar admitted that he was left embarrassed after he actually left his hotel room and met some incredible fans. Moreover, he joked that maybe it would be better for him to shift to Mexico City completely after his on-track antics.
Now that I’ve actually left my hotel a couple times and raced here in front of some of the most passionate fans I’ve ever seen, my opinion has changed. I am embarrassed by my comments, by the race I ran, and I may have to move here to hide out from Ricky anyway.
Carson Hocevar added.

Carson Hocevar now an ‘ally’ of Mexico City
Mexico has gained an unfair reputation over its crime issues. Despite authorities working tirelessly to combat violence, the country is deemed unsafe by most in the West. This was in-turn a reason for Carson Hocevar’s comments, since he might’ve only been exposed to such messaging in the past.

The No. 77 driver made it clear that he had learnt his lesson. Carson Hocevar confessed that he should not make assumptions before actually seeing things for himself. The 22-year-old apologized to the city, claiming that he was now an ally of Mexico. Now, the Spire Motorsports driver will leave his stream more often in a bid to actually experience the world by himself.
Count this as another lesson for me in a season I’ve learned so much. Don’t believe everything you hear without seeing it yourself. If anyone should give anyone or any place the benefit of the doubt it’s me. I’m sorry Mexico City. Consider me an ally going forward and an example of getting off Twitch and seeing things with my own two eyes.
Carson Hocevar explained.
Certainly, Carson Hocevar’s initial comments were unwarranted. The 22-year-old should have known better than to make such statements without any real evidence. At least, Hocevar has understood his mistake and will never repeat such a blunder again. Rather, he might actually be looking forward to coming back to Mexico City soon.
