Spire Motorsports’ Carson Hocevar is the drivers that got the most limelight during and after the Mexico City Cup race, other than race winner Shane van Gisbergen. He made it to the headlines for all the wrong reasons, starting with calling Mexico “a s***hole” while discussing the quality of the infrastructure in the country and the Ricky Stenhouse Jr. crash late in race.
Soon after the race, Carson Hocevar backtracked on his words and apologized admitting his mistakes. But Spire didn’t think it was enough, as the youngster is the face of the team that values respect the most. Hence, they decided to take internal disciplinary action, after communication with the stock car racing sanctioning body.
He will have to pay a whopping $50,000 fine, which will be distributed around three Mexican charitable organizations. The youngster also has to complete a mandatory cultural sensitivity and bias awareness training. Hocevar released a statement on the disciplinary action, admitting what he did was wrong.
Whoa everybody, the truth is the truth. I said something that not only was wrong, I said it without even laying my own two eyes on CDMX or turning one lap in an actual race at an amazing facility that welcomed me with open arms and I go and say that? Thank you for the support but I’m not sure we’re on the same page.

He understood that after experiencing the Mexico City event that he thoughts about the facility and the passionate fanbase was wrong. Hocevar sees this as a learning opportunity for him to grow as a person and a public persona. The only thing he regret about the situation is the fact that he didn’t meet the standards set by him team.
You guys want me to be me? It was me who said it and it was me who apologized after actually taking the time to explore the city and feel the passion of every fan in attendance. I appreciate the opportunity to learn and I knew before this weekend what respect means to this organization and I didn’t meet the standard so I got what I deserved.

Further discussing the situation in the statement, he admitted that he hates the fact that he bringing negative attention to the team. Though he doesn’t like the fact that things are public, but also appreciate the opportunity growing in front of his fans.

I hate learning these lessons in the public eye and bringing any negative attention to Spire or me. We’ve been fast just about every week and I’m sure I have plenty of mistakes left in me. I appreciate growing up in front of all of you and you guys get to see the good and the bad.
Carson Hocevar asserted.
Going into Pocono next-week, Hocevar will be looking forward to earning back to respect of the garage and the fans. It won’t be easy, but it is possible, considering the racer is still very young and is growing as a racer as well as a person. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star driver.
