With a new owner and a superstar to develop around for the next ten or more years, the Los Angeles Lakers are embarking on a new chapter in their history as an NBA team. Mark Walter made an offer that the Buss family couldn’t turn down, despite their reluctance to sell the organization or even consider doing so.
Jeanie Buss and company will be valued at a record-breaking $10 billion, the biggest amount ever paid for a professional sports franchise in the US. Given that, Buss will continue as the governor of the Lakers for a few years. Notably, the Lakers’ newest superstar, Luka Doncic, opened up on this major news via his X account, stating that he his excited to play under his new ownership.
The Lakers are an amazing organization. I’m looking forward to meeting Mark and excited about the future. I am also grateful to Jeanie and the Buss family for welcoming me to LA, and I’m happy that Jeanie will continue to be involved. I look forward to working with both of them to win championships!

Given how significant this transaction is, it raises the issue of whether Doncic was aware of the sale before its Wednesday disclosure. ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne claims that the Lakers’ newcomer was alerted before the announcement.
As per ESPN, Doncic was given a ‘short heads up’ during his February trade deal, which saw Anthony Davis go to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange. In August, Doncic will be entitled to a contract extension as he enters his first full season with the Los Angeles Lakers.
However, it is anticipated that the Lakers would be more aggressive with their spending going forward, which bodes well for their players, who are keen to contend for titles following a disappointing 2025 NBA Playoffs first-round loss.
Magic Johnson was the FIRST former Laker to react to the sale news
Just as the Lakers’ sale news broke out, former Laker Magic Johnson wasted no time in letting out his feelings. Mostly because he shares a great bond with the new Lakers owner, Mark Walter. Johnson, who co-owned the Los Angeles Dodgers with Mark Walter for 12 years, is well aware of what the new ownership means for Lakers supporters.

Johnson is overjoyed that the Buss family sold to Walter and is looking forward to what lies ahead for one of the most recognizable teams in professional sports. He took to his X account to share his views on this historic day for the franchise.
Job well done to my sister Jeanie Buss for striking an incredible deal and picking the right person to carry on the @Lakers legacy and tradition of winning – Mark Walter, my business partner and friend! Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand. The proof is in the pudding on what he’s been able to accomplish with the LA Dodgers. Mark has been nothing short of a winner notching 2 World Series and 11 NL West divisional titles in the last 12 years!

Johnson is very close to everyone involved, and it is obvious that he is thrilled to see Walter take control of the team he has supported and played for since being selected in the 1979 draft. It will be interesting to watch whether or not Johnson gets involved with the Lakers in the future.
Lakers star LeBron James faces wrath of an NBA analyst for his recent comments regarding ‘NBA rings’
LeBron James, a veteran forward for the Lakers, is receiving a lot of criticism for remarks he made on his podcast, “Mind the Game.” The 21-time All-Star criticized the NBA’s pervasive “ring culture,” emphasizing that a player’s brilliance shouldn’t be determined by the number of titles they have won. This did not go down well with FS1 analyst Craig Carton.
Carton made sure to attack James on the recent segment of the Breakfast Ball show on FS1.
He’s an insufferable narcissist… It’s so clear to me… about how Michael Jordan lives rent free in his head.

Carton’s comments come mostly because Michael Jordan has 6 NBA rings, 2 more than James has in his career. He pointed out that James had already declared himself the greatest of all time, surpassing Michael Jordan, which garnered a lot of attention for him. Many have criticized James for his comments towards the ‘ring culture’ in the past as well.
