Angel Reese is one of the most popular women’s athletes in the world. Her social media following trumps many other accomplished athletes across all sports and has been one of the catalysts for the stellar growth in the WNBA.
Last season, that popularity, along with her record-setting plays, helped the Maryland native land on the 2024 WNBA All-Star team. When it was revealed that she had made it to the team, the Chicago Sky forward could not hold back her tears.
This season, she was expected to continue that trend as many expected her to take a leap after all the developmental work she had undergone in the offseason and at the Unrivaled league. So far, it has helped her garner her 1st ever career triple-double.
That performance was part of a win, but the Sky have not been winning much otherwise, and are 3rd from bottom. Those losses could have played a part in the All-Star voting. When the league released the 1st returns of fan voting, Angel Reese notched 173,363 votes.

She was 13th on the list, which gave away the fact that the Sky’s miserable run so far might have played a hand. She was the 6th frontcourt player on the list, which meant if the voting stopped today, the 23-year-old would have to sit behind rookie Kiki Iriafen on the substitutes bench.
What made it worse was that, as the player with the most social media followers, she was nearly 350,000 votes behind Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark. Reese’s longtime rival stood at the top of the fan votes and was 12 places ahead of the Sky star.
Fans shocked by fan voting leaving Angel Reese down 13th
When the WNBA released the results of this fan vote on their X page, fans were asking where Angel Reese was. Then, when it dawned on them that she was at No. 13, they could not believe the votes she garnered. It was nearly a fourth of what Caitlin Clark notched.
Fans believe that if Angel Reese‘s followers are not voting for her, it does not paint a good picture. They questioned how Fever fans were voting for their players to move into the Top 10, but not Reese. Check out examples of those reactions below.
Angel not being top ten is embarrassing considering her popularity. https://t.co/fBMc6ZVvUs

Fan votes are one part of the quotient that comes into consideration when selecting All-Stars. Last season, too, fan votes placed several players associated with Clark into the All-Star positions. But when combined with votes from coaches and those of media members, only the deserving players get the nod.
One of the aspects coaches and the media look at is how much the player has performed compared to others, along with her team’s performance. If Angel Reese dominates individual statistics and if her team wins games, she might end up continuing the streak of All-Star games that started last season.
Angel Reese only player to average a double-double
Whatever the fans believe, Angel Reese has been quietly producing results on the court. Other than a few single-digit performances, the 23-year-old has largely done what her coaches have asked her to do. In doing so, she remains the only player to average a double-double this season.

The Chicago Sky will play the Phoenix Mercury later on, and unless she has a terrible game, the LSU alum should continue to be the sole player to average a double-double for the season. Reese’s strong motor helps her gather rebounds at will.
If she can start to improve her scoring as well as her passing, the 6′ 3″ forward could probably end up improving her game compared to last season. She has been fighting off her critics for so long. Maybe the best way to silence them would be to continue listening to her coaches and progress.
