A salient feature of the past two NBA seasons has been the rise of Victor Wembanyama. Even in a league of physical freaks, the Frenchman stands out as an imposing figure cut from a different cloth. He is maybe the most unique player in NBA history, and certainly has a higher ceiling than anyone ever before. Only 21 years of age, the sky is the limit for the 2023 NBA No. 1 overall pick, whose head seems to already touch it.

Victor Wembanyama had a few doubters who weren’t convinced he could handle the physicality of the NBA. While no one had any doubts about his defensive abilities, the question of whether he could stand the rigors of a full NBA season persisted. But after his first three months in the league, all of this has become moot. The 7’3.5″ unicorn led the NBA in blocks despite only playing in 46 games in 2024-25.

Wembanyama has averaged 3.9 blocks per game since January 1, 2024. He also averages 23.7 points, 10.9 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game while playing like a Defensive Player of the Year on the other end. The scariest bit of these stats is that this is not even an extended workload. Wembanyama has only played 31.5 minutes per game during this span. His stats will look even gaudier when he’s playing more minutes.

Yet, the Frenchman’s appetite to improve himself as a student of the game is insatiable. This is a man who truly adapts the Mamba Mentality and takes valuable advice in pursuit of greatness. He revealed in a recent interview that he always looks to pick the brains of his opponents. Wemby had a 45 minute talk with Nikola Jokic at the 2025 All-Star weekend where the MVP spoke to the young man extensively.

He revealed that he has a notebook with questions that he wants to pose the likes of LeBron James and Kevin Durant when he meets them:

I have a note on my phone with questions to ask KD, Bron… I had the chance to talk to Jokic for 45 minutes at All-Star. And I’m taking notes. When I’m told something, I don’t forget it. It’s super precious, for sure.

Kevin Durant and Victor Wembanyama could soon be teammates

According to various reports, Kevin Durant would view a move to the San Antonio Spurs as his top priority. The Slim Reaper reportedly prefers to play in Texas where he won’t have to pay higher state taxes on his $56 million 2025-26 salary. The presence of Wemby and All-Star De’Aaron Fox also increases the chances of his team becoming contenders.

On paper, this trio would be one of the best in the league. Durant is still an All-World scorer who had the highest scoring average for any 36-year-old in NBA history. He was efficient as well, scoring 26.4 ppg on over 53% from the field and 40% from 3-point range.

De’Aaron Fox has the speed and athleticism to be a matchup nightmare, while Wembanyama is fully one already. The Spurs have draft picks of their own in the loaded 2025 draft, though they could move one of those in a trade for the four-time scoring champion. Wembanyama looks ready to lead the Spurs to contention even at his current young age, and maximizing his rookie deal is a winning strategy for the team.
