NASCAR is tied up in a legal battle with 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports over the new charter system, after the team filed an anti-trust lawsuit in 2024. The latest court ruling as part of the legal drama has only made matters worse for the two teams. However, 23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin has made it clear that they will not go down without a fight.
Hamlin’s team and FRM filed a lawsuit against NASCAR over the new charter rules, accusing the sport of monopolistic behavior. Earlier this month, the US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit stripped the two teams of benefits enjoyed by the rest of the field. Though, on June 20, the hearing paused the injunction’s voiding. The entire situation has caused a lot of confusion amongst fans over the way NASCAR treats its field.
Denny Hamlin asserted that the solution can only be found with cool heads. The JGR star made it clear that it was NASCAR that needed to calm down over the situation. Hamlin declared that 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports were ready to take the battle to the limit, in order to get what they think they deserve as part of the charter agreement.
I have stated publicly that I’ve always hoped cooler heads would prevail… I can tell you this is, it’s not on our end that needs, you know, the cooler heads. It’s certainly, we’ve said that. I think the difference is they’re saying different things on their side. So, we’re prepared to go all the way.
Denny Hamlin said at Pocono.
This legal battle will have massive repercussions across the field. If Hamlin’s team manages to win the lawsuit, it can open the door for a charter system that is more favorable for teams in the sport. On the other hand, NASCAR will potentially crack down further on its control over the sport’s finances if it can win this legal case.
Denny Hamlin happy to be back after paternity leave
The NASCAR veteran missed the Cup Series’ debut in Mexico last weekend due to his personal commitments. Denny Hamlin was back home with his family on paternity leave, giving him some precious time with his newborn son. Ryan Truex subbed in for the JGR star for the international debut of the Next-Gen cars.

Now after taking a week off from NASCAR, the 44-year-old was rejuvenated. Denny Hamlin showcased his form yet again, as he clinched his first pole position of the season at Pocono Raceway. Though, Hamlin downplayed his result, highlighting that he was more rested than his rivals, who have been racing back-to-back. Perhaps, this allowed the JGR star to go a step further in terms of lap time.
Obviously, because I was a little more rested than the field right there, I was able to get a little more speed.

Certainly, Denny Hamlin remains one of the biggest names in NASCAR. The 23XI Racing co-owner might be deemed as a villain by some in the field, but he does bring in the results. Hamlin has curated his own cult of personality in the sport, something that has polarized opinions for years. Nevertheless, the JGR star is not concerned about his haters, as long as he is able to make his way to Victory Lane.
