In the matchup between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Chicago White Sox, D-backs star Ketel Marte would break down in tears during the middle of the game. It was later revealed that a fan made some ugly personal comments towards him over his late mother.

Marte opened the scoring for his side in this game in the first inning with a solo home run. It turned out to be his 15th home run of the season. The Diamondbacks would eventually wrap up the game 4-1 and claim another victory over the White Sox at the Rate Field.

In what was a smooth-sailing game, things got nasty after a spectator heckled Marte and made some personal comments regarding his late mother, Elpidia Valdez. The 31-year-old lost his mother in a car accident in 2017.

As the D-backs were preparing for a pitching change in the seventh inning, Marte was seen having an emotional breakdown. Manager Torey Lovullo and shortstop Geraldo Perdomo were seen trying to console the player while tears continued to flow from his eyes.

As per reports, a fan said something regarding his mother. He was later ejected from the ballpark.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time a player has been subjected to brutal heckling from fans this season. In a game between the Cleveland Guardians and the Boston Red Sox at Progressive Field in April, a fan would heckle Jarren Duran regarding his suicide attempt.

The Red Sox star in his team documentary revealed that he almost took his own life by pulling the trigger of his gun. Luckily for him, the gun got jammed. During this game, the fan would bring this incident up and made some insensitive comments towards him.

Manager Torey Lovullo comforts Ketel Marte after ‘terrible’ fan heckling incident

Ketel Marte was left emotional on Tuesday night after a fan at the Rate Field crossed some personal lines. After the game, manager Torey Lovullo broke his silence regarding this matter and called it a “terrible” incident.

Marte’s mother tragically lost her life in the Dominican Republic in 2017 in a car accident. She would pass away in the middle of the 2017 season, not long after she had spoken with him. He would leave the team and fly back to D.R. and missed around 4 games.

Marte and his team manager, Lovullo, have known each other for a long time. While speaking with the reporters regarding the incident, the 59-year-old seemed to have been holding backs tears of his own while speaking about what happened.

It was a terrible moment. Fans are nasty, and fans go too far. I love my players, and I’m going to protect them.

Marte would remain in the game despite this incident. However, even after the game concluded, the player was seen being visibly shaken by what transpired in the ballpark.

While speaking with the media regarding this, the shortstop went on a huge rant while expressing his love towards his teammate.

That can’t happen. Everybody knows how Ketel is. He’s fun. He plays the game hard. I feel bad for him. I feel mad about it. I hope MLB can do something with that guy. I don’t know who it was, but they’ve got to do something. We can’t continue to do that (expletive) here in MLB. He should be banned, for sure.

Fan heckling has become a major issue for the MLB in recent years. While some fans have said some nasty things in the ballpark, some players have even been subjected to online abuse and received death threats. Only time will tell how the league will tackle this situation and protect it’s players.
