As New Yorkers revel over the election of Zohran Kwame Mamdani as the city’s next Mayor, there have been mixed responses to his victory. The Indian-origin candidate shocked the nation as he beat Andrew Cuomo, Brad Lander, and Adrienne Adams in the election. With this win, Mamdani has put himself on track to win the Democratic primaries.
His win has brightened the spotlight on his political career. Mamdani’s moves, past and present, are being viewed under a microscope. Riley Gaines, the 12 NCAA All-American swimmer, is not a fan of Mamdani’s vision. The former swimmer has revamped her image since her loss to Lia Thomas, a transgender swimmer, at the 2022 NCAA Championship.
Gaines now fights against the inclusion of transgender girls and women in girls’ and women’s sports. She came across a 2020 post that Mamdani made in the wake of a pro-LGBTQ protest, which turned chaotic after the New York Police Department, fully dressed in riot gear, began to stop the crowd and arrested many on Broadway in Soho.
In a bid to control the crowd, it appeared that the police used their bikes to push people in the crowd aside. Mamdani had posted a message in favor of the protesters.

Gaines is concerned by this old tweet because it could indicate that Mamdani would go against all that she stands for. The tweet was deemed concerning because it signifies that the Mayor is willing to defund the police to protect the LGBTQ+ community.
Republican Vivek Ramaswamy came to Zohran Mamdani’s aid by bashing Riley Gaines
Gaines views this as a red flag. In the wake of President Donald Trump’s ban on allowing transgender girls and women from participating in cisgender sports, Mamdani’s election will likely mean that New York allegedly will not cooperate in enforcing a ban of this nature.

A key aspect of his campaign is to shift resources away from the NYPD and utilize that to create a new Department of Community Safety to improve the city’s public safety. He is progressive and committed to introducing policies that redistribute wealth, help the common man make more and pay less towards taxes, and improve public services throughout the city.
Mamdani has ambitious plans, but what he terms as ambition, Gaines views as a nightmare. The new Mayor has vowed to spend an estimated $65 million on publicly funded gender change treatments for minors.
Additionally, he vowed to investigate hospitals around the city that have put a full stop to providing gender-affirming care in fear of repercussions from the Trump administration. Mamdani intends to create an Office of LGBTQIA+ affairs at City Hall to cater to the issues faced by the community.
In the final days leading up to the election, Mamdani’s campaign site shares the Mayor’s comprehensive plan to ensure gender-affirming care for New Yorkers. An estimated $57 million has been allocated to public hospitals, community clinics, federally qualified health centres and nonprofits would receive an estimated $8 million for additional services.
There is a lot of ambiguity involved as the site does not mention if Mamdani intends to pay for just the medication involved in the transition process, or the entire surgery as well. While Gaines bashed his victory, a friend came to Mamdani’s aid. Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, who attempted to run for President, had some words for Gaines.
Here’s a solution: move to Ohio. The heart of the nation, with 4 full seasons & an economic boom on the horizon. Friendly, hardworking, family-oriented people. Diverse viewpoints. Zero capital gains tax, zero income tax, & a gold standard for K-12 education. All coming very soon.
He suggested that the former swimmer consider relocation if she has such an objection to Mamdani’s election as the Mayor. The coming days is expected to be filled with President Trump and Mamdani likely to be engaged in multiple disagreements.
