Jeff Teague attempted to shoehorn a LeBron James GOAT conversation over Michael Jordan, but Fat Joe wasn't having it.

If NBA media stopped talking about LeBron James vs Michael Jordan yesterday, it would be 22 years too late. This debate is fair to neither of the two players: James has his own legacy, but his isn’t touching Mike’s. Instead, James is often the butt of a lot of jokes and trash talk because he’s constantly brought into it. Jeff Teague attempted a similar thing on the Joe & Jada podcast, but Fat Joe brought him in line.

Joe & Jada is a podcast show that was recently started by two of the greatest New York rappers ever. Jadakiss is revered as a ‘God emcee’ for his lyrical dexterity, while Fat Joe had hits after hits during his heyday. While the duo isn’t exactly a brain trust, the two of them are pop culture staples who’ve been there and done that. The combination of their experiences builds the podcast into something listenable.

After interviewing musicians like Jim Jones, the duo recently had a sit-down with the cast of Jeff Teague’s 520 Podcast show. One of the topics that happened to be brought up was the inescapable, omnipresent GOAT debate. Teague attempted to anoint James as the GOAT while Fat Joe was talking about even the GOATs going unheard in many contexts. But the Bronx native was appalled at the notion of James being above Michael Jordan.

I think you (are) delusional. It’s too much delusion. Yo, we can’t have top tier people being delusional. We already got everybody delusional. You’re adding to the schizophrenia. You got this s*** f***ed up. What do you think, Jada, my business partner?

Jadakiss, who believes Nikola Jokic is the best player in the NBA, agreed with what Fat Joe said, stating:

I think Michael Jordan is the greatest. Then everything after that, however you wanna put it. Kobe > Bron, Bron > Kobe, this that. MJ is the GOAT of all GOATs.

Jeff Teague attempted to reason with Jada and Fat Joe with some arguments of his own, but his exaggeration wasn’t taken on face value by the hip-hop titans.

NBA media needs to stop revisiting the LeBron James vs Michael Jordan debate

In team sports, team accomplishments like championships and trophies hinge on every member of the team. However, basketball is different from ordinary team sports. In this sport, one great player has the ability to make an inordinate amount of difference to his team and lead it to glory more than other sport. It’s why NBA superstars make $60 million and role players barely get $2 million – a 30x difference in wages.

Superstars bear the brunt of victory and defeat more acutely in the NBA than in any other sports league. It is a superstar-driven league not just because it is marketed as one, but because it plays out as one. Thus, the ultimate litmus test to a player’s impact is winning things, which Michael Jordan has done more of. Michael Jordan bore all the ridicule of being deemed as a loser before he won his first NBA title in 1990-91.

He was proclaimed as the GOAT by mainstream media following his 1993 retirement despite not having as many titles as Bill Russell, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Magic Johnson because of his impact, but after his second retirement in 1998, he had more titles in the 3-point era than any player since Bill Russell. On top of that, he has more MVPs, more scoring titles and more statistical achievements than James in both of their best years.

The James-Jordan debate is one that was trumped up to bring views and clicks. Even though there is a large amount of revisionism, Jordan’s cultural impact alone outstrips everything LeBron James has achieved on and off the court. In addition to being a better player, Michael Jordan laps LeBron James in other aspects off the court as well.
