With Khaman Maluach selected with the No. 10 pick, the Phoenix Suns probably felt like they had won draft night. It appears like they had their future center. Although it was never definite which team would select Maluach in the draft, there was always a significant potential that he would be selected in the lottery or possibly in the top 10.
Notably, there is an interesting story behind this deal involving legendary NBA star LeBron James‘ agent, Rich Paul. The CEO of Klutch Sports appeared to plan a crucial draft-day move in a scene that exemplifies the agent-driven power structure of the modern NBA. Paul and Suns owner Mat Ishbia spoke on the phone on draft night, as seen in a now-viral video.
Paul, seated in a car, assessed the Suns’ level of curiosity in this matter.
I’m gonna try my best, because you’re our first choice… If he gets past Brooklyn, then yeah. But let me make this call so I can let you do what you need to do.

Although the pick was pre-agreed to be diverted to Phoenix, the Houston Rockets, who obtained the No. 10 pick in the Kevin Durant deal, technically made the selection of Maluach. But Rich Paul’s contribution went beyond simply completing a deal; he also used board manipulation to guarantee Maluach would be accessible at ten.
Maluach is a huge swing with even more potential for the Suns, who have been unable to find a long-term center solution after DeAndre Ayton left. The former Duke freshman, who is 7’1″, has exceptional defensive instincts, agility, and enormous potential as a lob threat and rim protector.
Maluach played 21 minutes a game at Duke, averaging a respectable 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks. His shooting splits (71/25/77) point to a large man with good touch already, who has the potential to become a two-way powerhouse. Getting a player so raw and with high potential in Maluach has put the Suns’ rebuild on a good start.
Rich Paul made an interesting statement about his client, LeBron James
Just after Paul orchestrated the deal, he did not waste any time talking about his main client, and Los Angeles Lakers superstar, LeBron James. Most recently, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that James is opting into his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season, Paul told ESPN. In addition, James’ agent also made an interesting remark about his client’s decision.

LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.

LeBron James’ possible return to the Los Angeles Lakers was questioned following a lackluster 2025 NBA Playoffs season. But by opting into his contract, he has sent mixed reactions regarding the rumors. Since LBJ will be 41 in the 2025–2026 season, no one would fault him for retiring. With a $52.6 million player option in his contract, James had an easy choice to make.
An NBA insider made a lucrative LeBron James-Cavs trade proposal
LeBron James is one name in and around the NBA that no one would turn down so easily. Any team acquiring James knows that they get a proper leader on their roster, on and off the court. Interestingly, NBA reporter Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports proposed that James and the Cavaliers go on a “farewell tour.”
Kevin O’Connor teased the NBA fans by replying to Shams Charania’s X post containing Rich Paul’s statements regarding LeBron James.

Regretfully, the Cavs lost in the second round of the playoffs to the Indiana Pacers, who went on to win the Eastern Conference. For the Cavaliers, adding James might not be cheap. They will have to form a trade combination that will have Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland included in it. Both parties would undoubtedly benefit substantially from this deal.
