A few weeks ago, LeBron James initially teased the NBA World with his cryptic retirement post on X, leaving everyone in doubt over his return. Moments after the post, James took to his socials again to make a stunning announcement that he would be back for year 23 as an NBA professional. But his wife, Savannah James, seems to be getting agitated with each year James chooses to play.

Savannah has reportedly privately stated that she would like the Lakers star to think about retiring from the game as soon as possible, based on a report by ESPN’s Shams Charania. One of the guests posted an unedited video to Instagram during a recent dinner in New York City with close associates, including Miami Heat star Kevin Love and their spouses.

Savannah wants me to f****** retire in a year or so.

In the video making the rounds on the internet, LeBron James can be heard saying

James has the potential to continue his 20-year string of All-NBA and All-Star selections. Last season, he produced 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists. Despite the huge numbers on his body, he continues to play at such a high level that quitting appears unlikely. But for his wife, Savannah, it seems that she has reached the boiling point.

It’s important to note, James’ agent, Rich Paul, told ESPN that James is choosing to exercise his $52.6 million contract option for the 2025–2026 campaign, according to Charania. In 2025–2026, LBJ will turn 41, thus it would be understandable for him to retire. James had an easy decision to make because his contract included a $52.6 million player option.

James has already achieved greatness in the league. He has won every possible accolade there is to win as an individual. To top this off, he even shared the court with his son, Bronny James, becoming the first father-son duo in NBA history to do so. Will James do the unthinkable and wait to share the court with his younger son, Bryce James, or will Savannah force him to retire next year? Time will tell.

Rich Paul made his intentions clear regarding his client, LeBron James’ aspirations

LeBron James’ agent, Rich Paul, told ESPN regarding James’ decision to opt into his $52.6 million player option. This still does not clear the air around James’ future, with the offseason trade deals being proposed in the background. Notably, Paul made his intentions clear regarding James’ aspirations going into year 23 in the league.

LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all.

Rich Paul told ESPN

This statement left the NBA world a bit confused, mainly because James can leave the Lakers’ side if he does not see proper progress on the roster. Although it is highly unlikely that happen, as James already has the likes of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves besides him but a starting center is what the team needs. It remains to be seen how the Lakers act on this as the offseason unfolds.

NBA reporter believes LeBron James could be seeking a trade move

Sam Amick of The Athletic revealed that some NBA executives think James would be looking for a trade, despite his decision to opt in for the last few years of his contract with the Lakers. Interestingly, Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report listed the New York Knicks as the top team on his list of possible destinations if James decides to hit the trade block.

The Knicks were just two games away from reaching the NBA Finals this past season, have enough trade chips to send to the Los Angeles Lakers while keeping most of their core in place… James has gone on record saying that he’s considered playing for the Knicks as a free agent earlier in his career.

Greg Swartz wrote

Notably, the Knicks and James have some history regarding a failed trade move in the past. As James was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2018, the Knicks were hell bent on signing him, but the King wanted to move to the West, to the Los Angeles Lakers instead. Now, 7 years later, it seems as if the Knicks will have a go at him since he has opted into his player option.
