Deebo Samuel continues to be the target of fat jokes. First, Brandon Graham advised the Washington Commanders’ wide receiver to stay in shape, and after Graham, Terrell Owens commented on Samuel’s physique.

Similar to Graham, Owens was also present at Eagle WR DeVonta Smith’s celebrity softball game. Owens bumped into TikTok reporter Janky Rondo, who told the 49ers legend that Graham called Samuel fat.

The 5x All-Pro wideout revealed that he loves Samuel, but at the same time, he needs to keep track of what he’s eating during the offseason.

[Deebo] is fat. He ain’t big-boned. That’s what you say when girls are mad. That’s the term you use when you don’t wanna call a girl fat. We say they’re big-boned. He’s about two chicken nuggets from tipping the scale.

Terrell Owens said

Rondo’s jaw dropped hearing Owens’ response. He clearly did not expect such criticism for a fellow ex-Niner.

Before speaking with Owens, Rondo caught up with Graham. He reminded the retired Eagles defensive end that Samuel’s addition has made the Commanders even better than last year, and they will finish the job this time around.

Graham listened to Rondo’s banter and replied,

I wouldn’t worry about him. He gotta be in shape first—he don’t look like he’s in shape right now.

Calling a receiver fat is the ultimate disrespect one can give, but the question stands: is it warranted? San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami had first teased Samuel gaining weight in February, even before his trade to the Commanders.

He is not in shape. I keep hearing it, 20 pounds overweight. And that led to a lot of his lack of explosion, in their belief, his lack of ability to get through tackles, (which has) kind of been who he is. That’s why he’s so valuable. It’s not because he’s outrunning people.

George Kittle’s attempt at damage control did little to make the situation better.

Analyst predicted a bounce-back season for Deebo Samuel

Samuel’s final year with the 49ers was underwhelming—he did everything head coach Kyle Shanahan asked—played slot, slant, performed jet sweep, and even blocked due to the shortage of players through injuries. His numbers took a steep fall. From 1100+ all-purpose yards and 12 touchdowns in 2023 when the Niners reached the Super Bowl, Samuel notched under 900 yards and just 4 overall touchdowns despite playing 15 games.

The Commanders presented a fresh new start, and he took it. NFL.com’s Marc Ross, in a recent article, predicted Samuel’s return to form.

For as good as he was with the 49ers, an argument could be made that [Deebo Samuel] is entering the best situation of his career after being traded to Washington this offseason. The change of scenery puts [him] in an offense that is led by [an MVP-caliber] quarterback, Jayden Daniels. Also, he’ll pair with a true No. 1 receiver in Terry McLaurin to form a dangerous tandem.

Samuel could experience a breakout season in the nation’s capital. During his six years on the West Coast, he only crossed 1000 receiving yards once, in 2021, when he racked up 77 catches for 1405 yards (18.2 YAC) for 6 touchdowns.

The Commanders are among the favorites to challenge the likes of the Niners and current holders of the Lombardi Trophy, the Eagles, for the Super Bowl. They will kick off the new campaign against divisional rivals, the New York Giants.
