The training camp is just over 20 days away, and the Pittsburgh Steelers remain in a stalemate with TJ Watt regarding a contract extension. While they figure out a solution, several teams have shown interest in trading for the pass rusher who bagged a 92.7 PFF grade in 2024.

Even though Watt wants to stay in Pittsburgh, anything is possible in football. Former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch gave Watt a reality check while speaking with Kay Adams on Up & Adams.

When you look back, no matter how great you are, there’s a strong chance the team that you start with, you’re not going to finish with.

Charlie Batch told

Watt skipped the mandatory minicamp as a form of protest for an extension. Batch revealed that he doesn’t know how long the 30-year-old wants to play for, but assumed it has to be at least four years. Cam Heyward is a great example of perseverance, staying in Pittsburgh during a time when the Steelers barely challenged for major honors.

Batch thinks that if Watt signs the new deal, it has to be for the Super Bowl.

[Watt] wants to be a one-helmet guy. Cam Heyward showed him how that works. But, ultimately, the goal in Pittsburgh is not to win division titles; it’s to win a Super Bowl. So, he’s going to pay attention to how the roster is made up.

Batch quipped

After the Steelers’ exit in the 2024 wild card, Watt made it clear that he wanted to stay a Steeler.

I don’t want to leave this place. I want to be part of the solution. I’ve put so much into it here.

The Steelers drafted Watt in 2017, and since then, he has racked up 462 tackles and 108.0 sacks in 121 games.

Insider shares concerning news regarding T.J. Watt’s trade

The Steelers waited a long time to get Aaron Rodgers on board, and by the looks of it, they are prepared for a dragged-out negotiation. However, at some point, the Steelers have to decide whether to pay the former Defensive Player of the Year or not.

There would not be any shortage of teams ready to trade for Watt if a resolution is not achieved.

Sources: In recent weeks, multiple teams have been discussing whether they can trade for Steelers’ standout T.J. Watt, who skipped the team’s most recent minicamp. Pittsburgh hasn’t shown any willingness to deal Watt so far, but he’s unhappy with his contractual situation, and sources believe outside team interest is likely to increase given today’s trade.

Meanwhile, the Steelers finalized major deals that did not involve Watt. In the early hours of Monday morning, general manager Omar Khan announced that they were trading for Super Bowl-winning All-Pro corner Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins received 3x All-Pro DB Minkah Fitzpatrick, who they had drafted 11th overall in 2018.

Ramsey was not the only Dolphins player who switched allegiance to the Steelers. Mere hours after the Ramsey deal, the Steelers also traded for Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith in exchange for a late-round pick.

Rodgers now has several big targets to work with in the new season. Aside from Smith, the Steelers have DK Metcalf, Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III, Pat Freiermuth, and Darnell Washington on their roster.
