Kevin Mayer is a French athlete. He has been the world champion in 2017, 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist, and world record holder in the decathlon. For over two years, since he achieved the world record with a score of 9,126 points, Mayer wasn’t able to complete a decathlon. His Achilles tendon injury refused to go away, with the toughest moment being the 2019 World Championship in Doha when the reigning world champion was forced to retire midway through the pole vault – the seventh event of the decathlon – while in the lead.

However, now being injury-free, Mayer can complete his unfinished business – a gold at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 2020. Though his current world ranking of 6 does not make him the favourite, it’s to be remembered that his low ranking is largely due to his non-participation for nearly 2 years. Moreover, Mayer is again looking in top form as he won the heptathlon event at the 2021 European Indoor Championships. Therefore, it becomes imperative to know a little more about the 2016 Rio Olympics silver medalist, Kevin Mayer.

Kevin was coached by Bertrand Valcin. However, in 2020, just a year before the Olympics, he ended his association with his long-time coach. Valcin had coached Mayer for 12 years out of his Montpellier training camp in southern France. Details on his new coach are unknown, and therefore, we will update as soon as we get any information.

Kevin Mayer Parents

Kevin was born to André and Carole Mayer. His paternal family and German-surname have their origin in the northeastern region of Lorraine, where his father grew up. He has three brothers: Thibault, Thomas, and Sébastien; the family was raised in La Roche-de-Glun, a small town by the Rhône river in the southeast of the country, where his parents still live.

It is not easy to make a comeback from an injury, especially when it keeps you out of touch for nearly two years. Having said that, Mayer has shown signs of his previous form, and no wonder he is being considered as one of the favourites to win the yellow metal.
