Alex Bregman‘s tenure with the Boston Red Sox might be coming to an end. As per reports from insider Jon Heyman, the 3-time MLB All-Star is expected to opt-out of his deal with the Red Sox and become a free agent once again.

Bregman’s free agency saga was one of the biggest talking points of the offseason last year. The third baseman would turn down a 6-year $156 million deal with the Houston Astros. He and his agent, Scott Boras, were seeking a deal in the region of $200 million.

After months of speculation and rumors, Bregman ended up signing a 3-year $120 million deal with the Red Sox. This contract saw him earn $40 million per year. It did have the opt-out clause in the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Following just one year with the team, the 31-year-old has reportedly made up his mind. As per reports, he will exercise his opt-out clause and test free agency once again.

His presence on the team did cause some stir. When he arrived in February, the Red Sox had Rafael Devers playing as the 3rd baseman.

With Bregman winning the Gold Glove and Devers making several errors in this position, it was expected that the team would give the former Astros man the nod for this position. It would create a rift as Devers initially refused to give up that position.

In the end, Devers had to settle with the designated hitter (DH) position. In June, the Red Sox would trade him away to the San Francisco Giants despite him signing a massive 10-year $313.5 million deal in 2023. The team would value Alex Bregman’s presence and leadership and thus decided to move away from Devers.

There are chances that the Red Sox could re-sign him on an improved deal. However, if the two teams do not reach an agreement, they will be left to search for a 3rd baseman again. For Bregman, there could be a lot of suitors, including the Detroit Tigers, who made a $171.5 million offer for him last winter.

Despite Alex Bregman’s stellar 2025 season, Red Sox suffered first-round playoff exit

When the Boston Red Sox landed Alex Bregman, there was a huge wave of excitement among their fanbase. The team finally landed a power-hitter. The 2-time World Series winner would go on to have a stellar season. Despite that, the team suffered a first-round playoff exit.

After missing almost two months of action due to a right quad strain, his first season with them turned out to be a success. He managed a produce a slash line of .273/.360/.462 while hitting 18 home runs and having 62 RBIs in 114 games.

This performance saw him earn his 3rd All-Star game selection. It was also his first All-Star game since his back-to-back appearances in 2018 and 2019.

Bregman and the Red Sox would finish the regular season with an 89-73 record and punched a Wild Card berth. In the American League Wild Card Series, they went up against the New York Yankees.

Despite winning Game 1 of this best-of-three series, the Red Sox ended up suffering elimination. Losses in Game 2 and Game 3 saw them become the first team in MLB history to lose the Wild Card best-of-three series after winning the first game. In the postseason, Bregman went 3-for-10 against the Yankees with only 1 RBI.

Only time will tell where Bregman’s future lies. If he does not return to the Red Sox, it could be a massive loss for the team and force them to go in search of another power-hitter in the free agency market.
