In Short
  • Marta Kostyuk won the women's final at the Madrid Open, marking her first WTA 1000 title.
  • Jannik Sinner aims to become the first man to win the first four Masters 1000 tournaments of the season at the Italian Open.
  • The Italian Open 2026 will take place from May 5 to May 18, with the women's final on May 17.

The Madrid Open on the women’s side is done and dusted. The final saw Marta Kostyuk secure a straight-set win over Mirra Andreeva to become a WTA 1000 champion for the first time in her career.

In the men’s final, scheduled to be held on Sunday (May 3), Jannik Sinner will lock horns with Alexander Zverev. Sinner is chasing history in Madrid, as winning the tournament will make him the first man to win the first four Masters 1000s of the season.

After the conclusion of the Madrid Open, the tennis world will shift its focus to the Italian Open, the sixth WTA 1000 of the season and the fifth Masters 1000. Jasmine Paolini will enter the tournament as the defending champion on the women’s side. Last year, the home favorite defeated Coco Gauff.

The men’s final also saw a home favorite last year. It was Sinner, but he couldn’t wrap the event in his favor, losing the match to his arch-rival, Carlos Alcaraz.

The Spaniard, however, won’t be playing in this year’s Italian Open because of an injury he suffered during the Barcelona Open. He was forced to withdraw from his second-round match and later skipped the Madrid Open. He will also not be playing the French Open, where he won in the last two seasons by defeating Zverev (2024) and Sinner (2025). Zverev is a two-time champion in Rome. He beat Novak Djokovic in 2017 and Nicolas Jarry in 2024.

Italian Open 2026 schedule

The main draw of the Italian Open is scheduled to start on May 5 and will be wrapped up on May 18. The women’s final will be held on May 17.

The Italian Open is the last big tournament before the Roland Garros. As Alcaraz won’t bid for a three-peat, Sinner will be the heavy favorite to complete his Career Grand Slam. He finished as the runner-up last year after squandering a two-set lead and three championship points.

Novak Djokovic, the six-time champion at Foro Italico, has signed up for the event, but it’s unclear whether he will participate in the tournament. He had skipped the tournament last year and instead played at the Geneva Open, where he defeated Hubert Hurkacz to end his title drought.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion was last seen in action in the fourth round of the Indian Wells, where Jack Draper defeated him. Djokovic also reached the final of the Australian Open after knocking out two-time defending champion Sinner, but he failed to defeat Alcaraz in the final.

Iga Swiatek will enter the tournament as a three-time champion. She lifted the title for the first time in 2021 by defeating Karolina Pliskova and defended it the following year by defeating Ons Jabeur. Her third title in the tournament came in 2024 against Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian has yet to taste success in Rome.
