Naomi Osaka overcame a set deficit to secure a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Eva Lys to reach the third round of the Italian Open. Osaka, a quarterfinalist in Rome, will next be up against Diana Shnaider.

At the press conference after her win, Osaka was asked whether she uses ChatGPT to analyze her opponents, to which she replied in the negative. When asked why she doesn’t use it, she said AI consumes a lot of water.

I mean, for me, yeah, because I don’t use ChatGPT at all. But I know some people use it every day. Also, like what happens if the ChatGPT is wrong?

Osaka reached her quarterfinals in Rome in her third appearance back in 2019. Last year, her run ended in the fourth round with a three-set defeat to Peyton Stearns. She, in fact, produced her best performance in this event last year on the clay swing. Osaka also won the Saint Malo Challengers on this surface last year by defeating Kaja Juvan.

I just heard it takes up a lot of water. I kind of like the water we have on earth.

Before arriving in Rome, Osaka suffered a three-set defeat at the hands of defending champion Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round of the Madrid Open. At the French Open last year, the Japanese ace exited after losing to Paula Badosa in three sets in the first round.

Naomi Osaka analyzes her match against Eva Lys

Eva Lys met Naomi Osaka for the first time in her career. Lys, who competed at the Italian Open for the second time in her career, had defeated Katie Boulter to set up the match against the four-time Grand Slam champion. Following the win, Osaka was asked in the press conference what the key to her win over the German ace was.

Honestly, I’m not so sure. I think for me, I think I played really well in the first set, then the second set, I had a huge dip. The third, I just tried to I guess focus a lot more on being more intensive. But she played really well. My first time playing her. I thought she was returning really well. It put a lot of pressure on me.

It was Lys’ fourth tournament on clay this season. She exited either in the first round or the second round. Lys, in fact, has yet to make a deep run in a tournament this year.

The 24-year-old, during the customary handshake with Osaka, said something to the former World No.1, who was asked in the press conference about the same.

I had a moment of I couldn’t hear. But smiling, smile, and wave. I also want to know. It seems like she was saying something really nice.

Osaka has yet to play a final this year. Last year, she reached two finals: she handed the walkover to Clara Tauson in the ASB Classic and later lost the Canadian Open to Victoria Mboko. Osaka has never played a final on clay and grass.

She has won seven singles titles from 13 finals, the last of which she lifted by defeating Jennifer Brady at the 2021 Australian Open. The 28-year-old will be meeting Diana Shnaider for the first time in her career. The Russian ace defeated Talia Gibson to schedule her second-round match against Osaka.

The French Open and Wimbledon are two Majors where Osaka has never reached the fourth round. She produced her best performance in Paris when she reached the third round in 2016, 2018, and 2019.
