- Kendrick Perkins believes Joel Embiid should part ways with the 76ers due to ongoing tensions.
- Embiid's relationship with the front office has soured, particularly after the trade of Jared McCain.
- Tensions also exist between players and coaching staff, affecting team dynamics throughout the season.
After the New York Knicks swept Joel Embiid and his Philadelphia 76ers in four games in the Eastern Conference semi-finals, many wondered if this team was going to stay the same after yet another early end to their season.
This team was built with the intention of fighting for the NBA championship. The core of Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey looked good on paper, but injuries were always going to be the dominating conversation surrounding the two veterans.
To compensate for those injuries, a team should have a deep and capable roster. This season, they struck gold with rookie VJ Edgecombe. But other than him, the team did not have many players to depend on.
I would like to see them blow it up. The only 3 people that are untouchable in Philly are Nick Nurse, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe… At this point, I feel like Joel Embiid has worn out his welcome… He’s not one of those cornerstone guys… It is time for him to get a fresh start.
Kendrick Perkins said on SportsCenter
The former champion believes that not only has the Cameroonian-French-American run its course with the franchise, but the 76ers are better off walking in a different direction.

Perkins pointed out that Embiid needs a fresh start to his NBA career, as it is clear that the franchise needs someone they can depend upon. But the former center also talked about his albatross of a contract that could stop them from splitting up.
Joel Embiid apparently not happy with Sixers’ front office
Joel Embiid’s injuries and the monster contract will deter other teams from trading for him. But what can improve if he sticks around in Philadelphia is how the team builds around him.
As the season progressed, it became clear the star center didn’t see eye-to-eye with the front office and the coaching staff… As such, he — along with others in the locker room — were not happy with the decision to trade second-year guard Jared McCain to the Oklahoma City Thunder, particularly without bringing in a player to replace McCain.

The Athletic’s Sixers’ beat writer revealed in his article that the Paris Olympics gold medalist was not happy with the franchise’s decision to duck the salary tax ahead of this past trade deadline.
He wanted the team to become stronger. Then, after the front office traded away Jared McCain, Embiid, and his teammates were not happy with that decision. He was a popular player and a very good scorer.
McCain is starring for the Oklahoma City Thunder as they look to sweep the Los Angeles Lakers. Had he been in Philly, his scoring off the bench could have helped the Sixers at least have a fighting chance against the Knicks.
Now, fans, McCain, and analysts are laughing at GM Daryl Morey‘s ‘sold high’ comment after trading the guard to the Thunder.
Joel Embiid and players had tense moments with coaches
The front office was not the only source of tension for Joel Embiid this past season. Tony Jones went on to reveal in his article how multiple players had a problem with Nick Nurse‘s decisions.

Tensions between certain players and his staff were present throughout the season. On April 1,… a handful of players met with members of Philadelphia’s coaching staff before shootaround in Washington to express concern over certain players’ participation in team activities and frustration over the direction of the 76ers’ season.
Jones revealed
That date is when Embiid wrote on X that he was not being allowed to play, even though he felt he was healthy enough. That may be a case of Nurse and his coaches being cautious with a player who has been featured on more injury reports than game box scores.
But if there were tensions among most of the players and the coaches, the 76ers’ ownership will need to take a long, hard look at everything before deciding on their direction forward.
