In Short
  • Tim Hardaway Sr. prefers prime Dwyane Wade over prime LeBron James.
  • Wade is recognized as one of the greatest shooting guards and a three-time champion.
  • Tim Hardaway Sr. does not include LeBron James in his top five NBA players of all time.

LeBron James and Dwyane Wade share a strong bond. The two superstars were drafted in the same class in 2003: James was the number one pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers, while Wade was the fifth pick by the Heat.

They joined forces in Miami in 2010 and formed the ‘Big 3’ along with Chris Bosh. The trio went on to dominate the NBA together. During their four-year run, they reached the NBA Finals four times and won two championships in 2012 and 2013. In both wins, James was named the Finals MVP.

However, former NBA star Tim Hardaway Sr. revealed that he would pick prime Wade over prime James.

LeBron has longevity. I’m taking Prime Flash over Prime LeBron… I know basketball. I’m a hall of famer… Look at the facts. Just look at it. Calm down.

LeBron James is often compared to Michael Jordan when it comes to the debate over the greatest player of all time. He is coming off a historic 23rd season in the NBA and led the Los Angeles Lakers to the second round of the playoffs this year. Meanwhile, Dwyane Wade had his fair share of injuries and retired in 2019 after a 16-year spell in the league.

While James was the best player in the Heat when they played together, Wade delivered a championship and was named the Finals MVP in 2006. Hence, Wade had shown that he could win a championship on his own till his body started to give in.

It may be surprising to hear Tim Hardaway Sr. pick prime Wade over prime James, but James himself has often credited Wade for teaching him how to be a leader and a winner. The two stars continue to be close to one another.

Dwyane Wade could hang with Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in a 1-on-1

Dwyane Wade is undoubtedly one of the greatest shooting guards of all time. He was explosive, and his athleticism was off the charts in his prime. He is the Heat’s all-time leader in points, games played, assists, steals, shots made, and shots taken, and is a three-time champion with them.

Tim Hardaway Sr. put Wade in the same tier as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as the best 1-on-1 players of all time.

I’m going to take Kobe. I take Kobe Bryant because his will to put that ball in the bucket was insane. He did not want to lose. Another guy I would take? Dwyane Wade. His tenacity, not just on offense, but his defense. His defensive skills, he could lock you up. He could stop you. But I’ll take Kobe Bryant. It’d be between Michael and Kobe Bryant.

On offense, Wade was one of the quickest and most difficult players to guard, and he was a very good defender as well. He established himself on defense for his ability to block shots and accumulate steals. He had all the attributes needed to be great in 1-on-1’s.

LeBron James has no place in Tim Hardaway Sr.’s top five players in NBA history

Tim Hardaway Jr. played 13 seasons in the NBA. He went toe-to-toe against the likes of Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and other greats in the 90s. He announced his retirement after the 2002-03 campaign, just before LeBron James got drafted into the NBA.

When asked about his personal list of the top five players in all time in the NBA’s history, Tim Hardaway Sr. said:

Everybody’s top five is different. And it’s no disrespect to LeBron James. LeBron playing at 41 and doing what he’s doing at 41 and flying around the court. What he has done is very remarkable. But I mean, you got Michael, I still say Kobe, I still say Magic and I still say Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and then you go from there. You got Hakeem Olajuwon, you got Shaquille O’Neal, you can pick whoever you want.

Tim Hardaway Sr. may be old-school, but it is quite harsh not to have a player like LeBron James in his top-five list. James has set and broken records ever since he stepped foot into the NBA, and he continues to do so after 23 years.
