- Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is withdrawing from the French Open due to a wrist injury.
The qualifying rounds of the French Open are underway. The main draw is set to start on Sunday (May 24th).
The tournament has already witnessed some drama. In the opening round of the qualifiers, Pedro Martinez and Rei Sakamoto got into a heated argument right after the final point of the match.
During the customary handshake, they started arguing and also shoved each other, and the altercation nearly turned physical. Things could have gotten worse had not the chair umpire John Blom climbed down from his chair and intervened.

Martinez clinched the win 6-2, 7-5, and finally snapped his four-match losing streak. The Spaniard then scheduled his next match against Britain’s Arthur Fery. Sakamoto was bidding to reach the main draw of a Major for the second time after his debut at the Australian Open, where Rafael Jodar knocked him out in five sets.
Martinez, on the other hand, has made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2019 French Open and has yet to progress beyond the third round. At the French Open as well, Martinez reached the third round in 2020, his best performance.
Last year, he suffered an opening-round exit, while at this year’s Australian Open, his run ended in the first round with a straight-set defeat at the hands of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. The 29-year-old has played three tour-level singles finals, winning just the 2022 Chile Open.
Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz won’t be playing at the French Open
Carlos Alcaraz injured his wrist at the Barcelona Open and, as a result, was forced to skip the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. In the Rome event, he was the defending champion. And now, Alcaraz will also not be featuring at the French Open, where he is a two-time defending champion.

After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing is to be cautious and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros, while we wait to assess the evolution to decide when we will return to the court. It’s a complicated moment for me, but I’m sure we’ll come out stronger from this.

Alcaraz will also skip the entire grass season. Last year on the grass swing, the seven-time Grand Slam champion won his second title at the Queen’s Club Championships, and later Jannik Sinner ruined his hat-trick goal in the Wimbledon final.
My recovery is going well and I feel much better, but unfortunately I’m still not ready to be able to play, and that’s why I have to withdraw from the grass-court swing at Queen’s and Wimbledon. They are two really special tournaments for me and I’ll miss them a lot. We keep working to return as soon as possible!

Alcaraz has already played three finals this year. He defeated Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final to become the youngest man to complete the Career Grand Slam and later beat Arthur Fils in the Qatar Open final. He also reached the Monte Carlo final, but Sinner stopped him from defending his title. It was Djokovic who knocked out Sinner in the semifinals of the Australian Open.
At the French Open, the four-time Grand Slam champion will aim to complete the Career Grand Slam and become the seventh man to do so. The 24-year-old is on a 29-match streak, thanks to his wins at the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Monte-Carlo Masters, Madrid Open, and the Italian Open.
