Iga Swiatek admitted she expects to cry through Rafael Nadal’s new Netflix documentary “Rafa,” revealing her coach Francisco Roig mixed up the premiere dates in Madrid, leaving her team disappointed but more determined than ever as she chases a fifth French Open title.

The world No.3 breezed through her opening match at Roland Garros on Monday, dismantling young Australian Emerson Jones 6-1, 6-2 in just one hour. But off the court, the Pole’s thoughts keep drifting back to her tennis hero Nadal.

Yeah, honestly it’s a hard topic for us because Francis told us in Madrid, ‘Hey, there’s this Rafa documentary premiere,’ and the whole team got ready the night before with the outfits and everything. But the premiere was a few days ago. Francis told us it was a month ago in Madrid 😂. Everybody got ready and he said ‘Oh, I messed up the dates, you know?’ So I was so sad. Yeah I’m gonna watch it straight away.. unless I play the next day, because I will cry. I need to plan it.

Swiatek was informed that each episode of the Nadal documentary is about half an hour long. The Polish icon reacted emotionally to it.

Yeah, but I might cry on all of them. I’d love to be at the premiere as well but I couldn’t… because of the planning mistake.

Swiatek has never hidden how much Nadal means to her. The 22-time Grand Slam champion was her idol growing up, and their connection has only grown stronger. She recently trained at the Rafa Nadal Academy during the clay swing, and Roig, who coached Nadal for 17 years, now works with her full-time.

The Coach Mix-Up That Sparked More Motivation

The story of the missed premiere adds a human touch to Swiatek’s intense focus. Roig was telling the team about the event, and everyone was getting excited and dressed up, only to find out it was already over. It’s the kind of relatable mistake that happens even at the highest level.

Yet it also highlights the close bond between Swiatek, Roig, and the Rafael Nadal camp. Training at the academy and having someone who knows Nadal’s game inside out has clearly helped her clay-court preparation. There’s a full-circle feeling to it all, and the young fan is now working with her idol’s longtime coach while chasing titles on the same courts where Nadal built his legend.

Swiatek was in the stands last year for Nadal’s emotional farewell ceremony at Philippe-Chatrier. She’s spoken often about how watching him inspired her own fighting spirit. That respect runs deep, and it’s clear the documentary will hit her on a personal level.

What Makes Swiatek So Dominant on Clay?

Iga Swiatek’s success on clay goes beyond talent. She combines physical strength with sharp tactical thinking. Her heavy forehand, improved serve, and that incredible sliding ability let her dictate play even when opponents try to push her back.

At this stage of her career, she’s also mentally tougher. The pressure of being a favorite doesn’t seem to weigh her down the way it once might have. She’s learned to embrace the expectations while staying true to her process.

Her recent form coming into Paris was solid, reaching the semifinals in Rome showed she’s peaking at the right time. Five of her last six matches on clay before Roland Garros ended in victories, building quiet confidence.

Swiatek faces Czech player Sara Bejlek in the second round on Wednesday. It will be their first career meeting. While Bejlek is a solid competitor, few expect her to trouble the Pole on this surface.
