Serena Williams continues to fine-tune her preparations ahead of her big return to the tour at the Queen’s Club Championships. The former World No.1 released a video of her training on an indoor court ahead of her doubles partnership with Canadian sensation Victoria Mboko in London next week.
On Monday (June 1), the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion confirmed her return to professional tennis and will play in the doubles category of the Queen’s Club Championships.
While awaiting her highly anticipated return to the court, Williams has resumed training in recent hours. A video shared on social media showed the former World No. 1 during a full training session on an indoor court. The 44-year-old was accompanied by former coach Rennae Stubbs and her sparring partner, Jermaine Jenkins.

However, on Saturday (June 6), the Queen’s draw was held in London. Williams and Mboko were paired to face No.3 seeds Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe. The tie is expected to be a difficult one for Williams as Melichar-Martinez and Routliffe are well-known doubles stars, and the former reached the final of the Italian Open with her partner Cristina Bucșa.
Williams has not played a professional match since her third-round exit at the US Open in September 2022. That being said, she was still performing well before she retired from touring. At the start of the 2021 season, Williams ranked World No.7 by the WTA, before falling to No.41 by season’s end.
However, in her final season on tour, she had to prioritize Grand Slam tournaments and WTA 1000 events hosted in North America. Though she made her return to the court at the Eastbourne International in 2022 due to a lingering hamstring problem, she competed in just five tournaments.
It is believed that Williams’ return is geared towards playing at the Wimbledon Championship, where she won seven of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles. She also won the doubles title six times. Her last appearance at the All England Club ended in defeat to Harmony Tan in three sets in the first round.
Serena Williams to play at the Berlin Tennis Open ahead of the Wimbledon Championships
Serena Williams will compete at the Berlin Tennis Open in the German capital, which kicks off on June 15, two weeks before the Wimbledon Championships start on June 29. Nine of the top 10 WTA players, including Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, are set to take part in the tournament in Berlin.

The WTA 500 tournament is part of her continued preparation ahead of the Wimbledon Championship. However, she’s only going to play in the doubles category with a different partner from the one she will feature with at the Queen’s Club Championships. In a statement released by the Berlin Tennis Open, Williams revealed that she aims to build momentum at the tournament:
Every tournament I add to my schedule right now is special, and Berlin is no exception. I look forward to playing in front of the German crowd and continuing to build momentum for the grass-court season.
The last time Williams competed at the Berlin Tennis Open was in 2008. She reached the quarter-finals of the event before losing to Dinara Safina in a tight three-set contest. The American legend has never won a grass-court title outside Wimbledon throughout her prolific career. The Berlin Tournament will end on June 21.
