Donald Trump has been a lifelong fan of the New York Knicks. He used to be a regular spectator courtside whenever the Knicks took to the court at Madison Square Garden. However, he had not made an appearance in the arena after becoming the President of the United States of America till Monday night.

Unfortunately for him, his return to the iconic stadium did not go according to plan. After winning the first two games on the road, the Knicks suffered a 115-111 defeat to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

To add to the disappointment of the loss, Trump was given an unusual welcome when he appeared on the giant video screens. The fans were heard booing the President as he stayed on the screen for a little more than eight seconds.

After the match, Trump was asked about the reactions he received in his hometown.

I thought it was amazing. Even when they had the cameras on me, I thought it was very good. It was mostly cheers. It was loud. And it was very enthusiastic.

Donald Trump in an interview

When Donald Trump announced he would attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals, it sparked a lot of reactions across the internet. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver even expressed excitement when the announcement was made. Unfortunately, the fans at the MSG did not share the same feelings.

Trump was seen next to New York Knicks team owner James Dolan. Dolan is a supporter of Trump and the Republican Party and invited the President for Games 3 and 4.

The loud boos from the fans were not a surprising reaction. The city of New York is a blue state and largely supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 US presidential election against Trump. But the reactions did seem to bother Trump as he just brushed them off.

The President was also seen with his granddaughter Kai at the box. The beefed-up security forced the Knicks to cancel MSG watch parties in the city, adding to fans’ frustration.

Donald Trump’s reaction to the loud boos got the internet buzzing.

The internet called out the President for lying about the cheers he received. The increased security and prices for the game added to the fans’ frustrations.

Donald Trump’s homecoming ended in a loss

It was not the result Donald Trump would have been hoping for after making his first appearance in an NBA game after becoming the President. His announcement drew several reactions from the NBA community, including Stephen A. Smith. The journalist believed that Trump’s presence at the Garden would add to the chaos in the stadium.

Just like the first two games, this was a thrilling contest that went down to the wire. The Knicks were looking to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in their first NBA Finals in 27 years.

The loss also ended their 13-match winning streak. Their last defeat in the playoffs came in Game 3 against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round. Since then, they have clean swept the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers.

It looks like Trump’s presence was not a lucky charm for the club. It remains to be seen if he will be present for Game 4 as well.
