For the first time in over two decades, a Roland Garros champion did not appear on the front page of French sports daily L’Equipe. The player was Alexander Zverev, who clinched a five-set win in a thrilling French Open final against Flavio Cobolli, becoming the first German man since Boris Becker at the 1996 Australian Open to win a Major.

A day after his win, L’Equipe put the photo of the women’s handball team from Metz, which won the Champions League for the first time, on its front page, snubbing the 29-year-old. They gave no explanation for this.

L’Equipe also shared the photo of the cover on X and has already received more than two million views. During Zverev’s post-match press conference, he was asked by this French daily about his domestic violence allegations.

First of all, this is not that kind of interview. Secondly, do you know that the accusations have been proven to be false? This is the second time you’ve asked me about this. I did everything I could, and my innocence has been proven. I think we should stop; it’s better this way.

Alexander Zverev said

Back in 2024, just a couple of days before his five-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final, the trial about domestic violence allegations made by his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his daughter, Brenda Patea, in October 2023, was discontinued. Before the case was discontinued, Zverev and Patea reached a settlement. “The decision is not a verdict, and it is not a decision about guilt or innocence,” Tiergarten District Court spokesperson Inga Wahlen told the media.

This was also not the first time he was accused of domestic violence. Before Patea, his ex-girlfriend Olya Sharypova also accused him of the same, but an investigation by the ATP Tour found that the allegations lacked “insufficient evidence”. Zverev repeatedly denied all of these accusations.

Last year, after his straight-set defeat to Jannik Sinner in the final of the Australian Open, a woman in the crowd yelled, “Australia believes Olya and Brenda! Australia believes Olya and Brenda!” when Zverev was preparing for his runner-up speech. Sascha looked toward the crowd and, later at the press conference when asked about it, said, “Good for her, I think she was the only one in the stadium who believed anything in that moment.”

Rafael Nadal congratulates Alexander Zverev after his French Open win

In 2022, Alexander Zverev set up a semifinal match against eventual champion Rafael Nadal at the French Open. During the second set, Zverev suffered a severe ankle injury while chasing a ball, and he left the court in a wheelchair.

Next year, he reached the semifinal, and in 2024, he reached the final. And after finally tasting success here, Zverev, during his winner’s speech, said, “I have had the best moments and the worst moment of my life on this court.” Zverev was showered with praise from the tennis world, and Nadal too took to X and congratulated him.

Congratulations, @AlexZverev on winning @rolandgarros! So well deserved after all the hard work and perseverance. You’ve been chasing your first Grand Slam for a long time, and you absolutely deserve it! And congratulations to Flavio as well for a fantastic tournament!

It was also Zverev’s first title of the season. Before Paris, he had played just one final, at the Madrid Open, losing the match to Jannik Sinner. Furthermore, before this event, he had featured in three Major finals and lost all (2020 US Open, 2024 French Open, and 2025 Australian Open).

The win did not change his rankings. He will continue to sit in the third spot behind World No.1 Sinner and World No.2 Carlos Alcaraz.
