The news that Donald Trump was going to attend Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden dominated headlines more than anything else associated with it.
From rumors about where he would sit to reports that New York Knicks owner James Dolan had sent him an official invite, those conversations took precedence in both mainstream media and on the internet.
Then there were other discussions about how New Yorkers fans would have to abide by the rules set for Game 3, as security would be heightened for the President’s arrival.
Stephen A. Smith had already begged Trump not to go to the Garden. He predicted that the arrival of the most powerful man would just make matters worse than the chaos that is already ensuing in the city. Since that did not stop Trump, the ESPN analyst went on to say this on First Take.
This president has no business showing up in New York City. I am dead serious. It is selfish. It is narcissistic. It is ridiculous that he is coming to this game.
Stephen A. Smith said
The 58-year-old reiterated that he would say the same thing had Hooper in Chief Barack Obama, or any other President had done the same thing.

Smith pointed out how the Garden, being smack in the middle of the city, makes it a logistical nightmare compared to if Donald Trump were to appear at a football stadium.
Fans slam Stephen A. Smith for criticizing Donald Trump’s appearance at MSG
Basketball fans know that Donald Trump‘s arrival makes it a tough situation for law-enforcement agencies, and Knicks fans who have spent thousands of dollars just to wait their turn.
However, most of them decided to remind Stephen A. Smith that, as a fellow New Yorker and longtime Knicks fan, he should not be asking the President to stay away from what could be a historic moment.
Fans felt that the political commentator was being hypocritical in his recent opinions and should stop jumping onto whatever he felt would boost his visibility. Check out examples of those reactions below.

The POTUS was born and raised in NYC and has rebuilt the city over the years. He has every right to be there.

Lets say somehow Stephen A becomes President, will he not attend a game 3 Knicks Finals if the team hasnt won a Ring in 52 years? Or been to a Finals home game in 26 years?

Obama attended NBA and WNBA games while serving as President and I don't recall a national media panic about it.

Were commentators demanding he stay away from sporting events and focus exclusively on governing?
If not, what's different now?

Over 50 years (documented since 1975); sources describe him as a lifelong Knicks fan.
Trump (born 1946, same year the Knicks were founded) has public ties dating to 1975 as a real estate adviser to team/arena owners. He was a regular courtside attendee in the 1990s…
If it was Obama it would be ok. He would be a guest on first take

Donald Trump’s arrival would lead to some headaches. But the Knicks made it clear with instructions on how the chaos that generally ensues in New York could be contained when the President arrives. It was just a matter of how well they could enforce it.
Hollywood icon defends Donald Trump’s appearance at MSG
Even though Stephen A. Smith tried to justify his rhetoric by suggesting no President should go to MSG during the NBA Finals, others do not agree with that notion.

Trump and Mayor Mamdani are Knicks fans and have been, they’re New Yorkers.
Whoopi Goldberg said on The View
This was the Hollywood legend, often known for her outspoken opposition to Trump and his regime. But in this instance, she defended the President. She believes anyone who is a true New York Knicks fan has the right to go to watch the team play.

Whoopi Goldberg’s view left her otherwise opinionated colleagues baffled, but she made it clear that, as New Yorkers, they get a pass, even though she may not like them.
