After three failed attempts, Alexander Zverev finally tasted success in a Grand Slam final. In the French Open final, Sascha overcame Italy’s Flavio Cobolli to become the first German man since Boris Becker at the 1996 Australian Open to win a Major.

Zverev, even though he is one of the best players on the tour, is also a controversial figure because of his on-court conduct and statements. Such things often get ignored when a player emerges triumphant in a Grand Slam tournament, but in Zverev’s case, his highly publicized domestic violence accusations are once again making headlines all over the world.

At the press conference after his win in the final, Zverev was asked by French daily L’Equipe about these allegations, to which he said the accusations are proven false before ending the interview. Becker, when he came across a post on X about Zverev’s decision to abruptly end the interview, simply wrote, “But why?“

Check out his post here:

Two years ago, just a couple of days before his French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz, it came to light that Zverev and his ex-girlfriend Brenda Patea had settled his domestic assault case out of court. Patea accused him of physically abusing her and damaging her health during an argument.

Before Patea, his ex-girlfriend Olya Sharypova also accused him of domestic violence, but when the ATP Tour investigated, they did not find sufficient evidence, and so the World No.3 continued playing.

Zverev, who also made the final of last year’s Australian Open, heard a woman in the crowd shouting, “Australia believes Olya and Brenda! Australia believes Olya and Brenda!” Dejected after his straight-set defeat to Jannik Sinner, Zverev, when asked about the woman at the press conference, said, “Good for her, I think she was the only one in the stadium who believed anything in that moment.”

Also recently, former WTA player Alize Cornet took to her Instagram story and shared an article about Zverev’s domestic assault allegations. The Frenchwoman had criticized the 29-year-old after he said athletes are stupid and have nothing in their brains during his on-court interview following his semifinal win over Jakub Mensik.

Andre Agassi shares his dirty little secret to warn Alexander Zverev

Andre Agassi, like Alexander Zverev, won his first Grand Slam title after losing three finals (the 1990 and 1991 French Open and the 1990 US Open). During TNT Sports’ French Open coverage, seven-time Grand Slam champion warned Zverev that winning a Major changes nothing.

You can win a Slam…does it really change your life? You can say it, it’s easy to say, but I don’t know if it does. We have had a lot of one-Slam wonders that have done some incredible — I’m sure they’re thrilled they won.

But Agassi also lauded Zverev for his consistent performance in the Majors. Except for Wimbledon, Zverev has consistently made deep runs in the other three Majors in recent years.

He deserves a lot of credit for always having a say at the end of these events. Come rain or shine, the guy is there – if you get enough looks, it’s going to happen. There’s no doubt that winning a Slam is a binary moment in a player’s career. […] To a large degree, you have to respect his fortitude of all the years, coming up short but always putting himself in position.

Andre Agassi added

The French Open title is his first title of the season. After reaching the final of the clay-court Major, Zverev withdrew from the Stuttgart Open, where he lost to Taylor Fritz last year. Zverev has played three finals on grass but has never won a title.
