Andre Agassi has called for greater clarity on the extent of Carlos Alcaraz‘s wrist Injury, arguing that the lack of precise medical information makes the situation impossible to analyze properly. The former World No.1 pointed out that the tennis community is left with speculations about his return from injury.

Alcaraz suffered the wrist injury during his opening match at the Barcelona Open against Otto Virtanen. Although he finished the match after twisting his arm, he later pulled out of the tournament, revealing that test results showed the injury was worse than feared. There were expectations that he would return to the court to defend the Roland Garros title, but he withdrew from the tournament.

There were hopes that he would play at the Wimbledon Championship, but shortly afterward, he confirmed his absence from the entire grass-court swing. Since then, there has been public information as to when he will return from the injury. However, a few days ago, a clip showed him playing tennis with his left hand rather than his right hand.

There’s a growing belief that he will be back on the court before the US Open in August, but there’s also a chance he might miss the tournament. Former players such as Alex Corretja and Rafael Nadal have advised him to take his time and recover fully before returning to the tour, as that would be best for him.

Currently, Alcaraz’s absence has allowed his arch-rival Jannik Sinner to widen the gap between them in the ATP rankings. Sinner holds a 3500-point lead over Alcaraz, who is ranked World No.2. In a conversation on The Big T podcast, Agassi stressed that uncertainty in Alcaraz’s injury risk misinforms expectations around recovery:

It would be really helpful if he or someone close to him clearly explained the exact nature of his injury, because at this point, we can only speculate. If it’s a form of tendinitis, is it a specific inflammation like dorsal capsulitis or a carpal tunnel-type problem? What exactly are we talking about, and what are the treatment options? I don’t know precisely what he has. On the other hand, if the situation is more serious and requires heavier interventions…

Alcaraz currently has 9960 ranking points. He’s supposed to defend 1700 points this grass-court season, but won’t do so due to his injury. He will hope that he gets back to the court before the North American hard-court swing, where he has to defend 3000 points as the Cincinnati and US Open champion.

Carlos Alcaraz told his injury could influence his mindset when he returns to the tour

Over the past few years, there has been an increase in injuries among players. This has led many to call for an overhaul of the tennis calendar, as players now participate in too many tournaments. However, players who come back from injury in recent months often suffer setbacks and take a longer time to get their game rhythm.

This has happened to Arthur Fils, Taylor Fritz, Qinwen Zheng, and Barbora Krejcikova. Nonetheless, Alcaraz did not undergo surgery for his wrist injury because he wants to allow the injury to heal naturally. During the aforementioned conversation, Andre Agassi pointed out that Alcaraz’s injury could influence his mindset and competitive outlook upon return:

I think this ordeal could make someone who deeply loves tennis and always hungers for the game even more grateful to be able to return to the circuit. I believe we could see an even more determined and aggressive Carlos Alcaraz upon his return, provided he manages to fix his only real current problem: his right wrist.

Alcaraz began this season on a high, winning the Australian Open and completing his Career Grand Slam. He claimed his second title at the Qatar Open but had a difficult period at the Sunshine Double. The 23-year-old’s last championship match on tour came at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he lost to Jannik Sinner in three sets.
