John McEnroe is a lifelong and avid fan of the New York Knicks. Native to the city of New York, McEnroe is often seen courtside during Knicks games at the Madison Square Garden. The all-time great tennis player made his presence felt in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Wednesday with his reactions and constant support.

Game 4 between the Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs was a game for the ages. The Spurs led by as many as 29 points in the second half until the Knicks pulled off the largest comeback in NBA Finals history. Some clutch plays paired with some errors by the Spurs, the Knicks registered a 107-106 victory at the MSG.

Donning the Knicks jersey, McEnroe made an appearance on NBA Today and thanked the Spurs for the Knicks’ legendary comeback.

I’m feeling that (Knicks in five). After you lose a game like that, it’s tough to come back. If you got a lead like that and you choke that bad, thank you. Thank you De’Aaron Fox for not dunking it.

John McEnroe said

McEnroe loved every bit of what he saw in the second half of Game 4 as the Spurs blew their huge lead. The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion flew from the French Open, where he served as an analyst for TNT, to make sure he was present at the Garden for the important game of his favorite team.

There were several key moments in Game 4 towards. First was De’Aaron Fox going for a wide open layup when the Spurs were up by one point with 10 seconds to go. His shot ended up getting blocked by OG Anunoby. It was a blunder on Fox’s part, as he should have dribbled the ball and wasted time until he got fouled.

The second big moment was when Anunoby tipped the offensive rebound, which gave the New York Knicks the lead in the end to win the game. The win gave the Knicks a 3-1 lead heading into Game 5.

With the Knicks getting blown away in the first half, David decided to leave the arena. But McEnroe convinced the comedian to stay.

Larry’s (David) like, ‘Let’s get out of here, I can’t handle this anymore!’ I’m like, ‘Larry, take a deep breath here!’ I was trying to talk myself into it.

John McEnroe said on Dan Patrick Show

David would have been delighted that McEnroe convinced him to stay for the second half, as they witnessed one of, if not the greatest comeback in NBA history. The Spurs may have committed some big mistakes, but credit has to be given to the Knicks as well for believing in themselves and not throwing in the towel.

John McEnroe on the importance of Jalen Brunson for the Knicks

Jalen Brunson has been the leader and the offensive engine of the Knicks since joining them in 2022. After taking them to the Eastern Conference Finals last year, he has taken his game to the next level in the playoffs this time.

John McEnroe has been supporting the Knicks for the majority of his life, so he has seen several greats don the Knicks jersey for over five decades. When asked about Brunson, he said:

When he was in the (Eastern Conference) Finals with Doncic, we thought ‘Okay we got this pick up’ I got to be honest, I didn’t realize he was going to be this great. Brunson has proven everybody wrong. He is the greatest leader I’ve seen in the last 40-50 years.

McEnroe and Knicks fans have waited for 53 years to win the NBA championship. They will have the chance to do so in Game 5 in San Antonio on Saturday night.
