The Carolina Hurricanes are back at the top of the NHL mountain. On Sunday, the Eastern Conference side shut out the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to lift their 2nd Stanley Cup trophy.
The Canes had been on a dominating run in this offseason. After sweeping the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 in the first and second rounds, respectively, they faced off against the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Final.
After losing 6-2 in Game 1, the Hurricanes lived up to their name and blew away the Canadian side. They won 4 straight games to reach the final and took on the Golden Knights.
Once again, they lost the series opener as the Golden Knights held on to a 5-4 win in Game 1. The second game of the series saw the Canes win 4-3 in overtime and extend their OT playoff record to 6-0 this year.
This perfect record was broken in Game 3, as the Golden Knights won 5-4 in 2OT. After that, the team from Carolina did not look back. A 5-3 win in Game 4 was followed by a 4-2 win in Game 5, which put them on the edge of glory.
In Game 6, the Golden Knights needed to win to push the series to Game 7. However, they once again conceded first in the series as Taylor Hall smashed in a wrist shot in the first period. Jackson Blake‘s strike then put the visitors 2-0 up in the second period.
With seconds remaining on the clock, the Golden Knights pulled off their goalie. Nikolaj Ehlers, who had been a consistent performer for the Canes in these playoffs, sealed the win with an empty net goal.

For the Golden Knights, it was their 2nd defeat in the final. After losing in the 2018 Final against the Washington Capitals, the Las Vegas-based side took down the Florida Panthers in 2023 to lift the trophy.
Hurricanes’ historic run ends in Championship glory
The Carolina Hurricanes took the NHL by storm this season. They finished 1st in the Metropolitan region with a 53-22-7 record and last suffered back-to-back losses in January. Their historic run has now ended with Championship glory.

The Canes were indeed the team to beat. They suffered just 3 losses in the playoffs this season.
This is the fewest amount of defeats for a champion since the 1988 Edmonton Oilers. The Canadian side lost just 2 times during their dominant run.

Their coach, Rod Brind’Amour, also joined an exclusive list. When the team won the cup in 2006, Brind’Amour was the captain of the side.
Two decades later, he has coached the team to their 2nd Stanley Cup victory. He thus becomes just the 7th player in history to win the Stanley Cup with the same franchise as a player and coach. He is also the 4th person to win the trophy as captain and coach with the same team.

Meanwhile, their current captain, Jordan Staal, was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner. This honor is given to the most valuable player (MVP) of the playoffs. The veteran had 12 points (8 goals and 4 assists) with 6 goals coming in the Final.
